David Spade’s new book “Almost Interesting” is out this week and Salon.com posted an excerpt from the book detailing the infamous feud with Eddie Murphy that began when Spade insulted Murphy on his popular Weekend Update segment, “Hollywood Minute.”

Spade said about Murphy, “Look children, it’s a falling star. Make a wish.” Murphy, who in many ways saved Saturday Night Live during a really bad period, was furious and the fallout lasted for decades.

In the excerpt, Spade details the desperation, competitiveness and constant need to kill on SNL that drove him to go for the jugular when he wrote up the Hollywood Minute segments. He also shares the events that followed the Hollywood Minute episode, including relentless angry phone calls from Murphy that Spade tried unsuccessfully to duck.

“Now here comes Eddie . . . “David Spade, who the fuck do you think you are?!! Honestly? Who. The. Fuck. Going after ME?? You dumb motherfucker! I’m off-limits, don’t you know that? You wouldn’t have a job if it weren’t for me. Talking shit about me??” Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera . . . on and on and on and making me feel like shit.”

Spade says even his friends had to shun him when they were with Eddie after the incident.  At a Stones concert not long after it happened, Spade saw Murphy sitting with Chris Rock. He remembers Rock mouthing to him, “I can’t talk to you. I’m with Eddie.”  Even though Spade new his friend was half kidding him, he says it scared him to death.
