John Cleese Says the Idea to Tour with Eric Idle Tour This October Was an Accident

It’s tough to get at straight answer out of Monty Python founding members John Cleese and Eric Idle, but why would you want one?

NPR’s Robert Siegel attempted to interview the duo about their new tour which will take them through Sarasota, Ft. Meyers, West Palm Beach, Miami, Clearwater, Orlando, Savannah, Atlanta, Charlotte, Baltimore, and more throughout October, but didn’t get a lot of answers. Cleese told Siegel that the idea for the tour came after Cleese and Idle had a little chat in front of an audience while Cleese was out promoting his book last November.

“[I]t happened as I think a lot of sort of interesting things sometimes happen – by complete accident, which is, last year in November, I was in LA and Eric very kindly agreed to interview me for my book. I was playing my autobiography. And we just went out in Pasadena in front of a very friendly, warm audience,” he said. “And afterwards, we couldn’t remember a single thing we’d said. It was a total riot. And we didn’t say it at the time, but the two of us kind of independently thought, hmm, there’s money in them there laughs.”

So Cleese and Idle will take a month long road trip together with their show “Together Again At Last…For The Very First Time.” The show blends scripted and improvised bits with storytelling, musical numbers, exclusive footage, aquatic juggling and an extended audience Q&A, but as you can imagine, no two shows will be quite the same.
