Last night on the East Coast, while the Peabody Awards were being handed out at Cipriani Wall Street in Manhattan, the Broadcast TV Journalists Association gave out the Critics Choice Television awards in Beverly Hills. In the fifth annual event, the CCTA show was broadcast live on A&E last night from the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Amy Schumer took home awards in both ceremonies.

The Peabody Awards recognize excellence in many forms of broadcast including programming created by radio and TV stations, networks, webcasters, podcasters, producing organizations and individuals. The honors are awarded by the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication. The Peabody winners were announced months ago but there were still a few surprises at the ceremony, like a Tina Fey, Amy Schumer stage kiss. Peabody Award winners in comedy included Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Inside Amy Schumer, Jane the Virgin, and Adventure Time.

Amy Schumer is killing it right now,” Fey said. “She is the biggest deal in comedy right now.” Fey added that celebrating Schumer’s achievements from her work leading “Inside Amy Schumer” was the only reason she trekked downtown in the rain to the ceremony.

“I really wanted to come down here tonight, and in a Madonna kind of way try to, like, feed off her youth and maybe suck her soul out in a very awkward, staged lesbian kiss,” Fey told the audience. “But when I pitched that idea to Amy’s camp, they came back with such an immediate ‘yes’ that it kind of grossed me out.”

The two comedy stars locked lips anyway.

In Schumer’s acceptance speech, she said, “We thought we were making this secret feminist show and people weren’t going to catch on what we were doing.”

The other major comedy winner was John Oliver, for his work on HBO’s “Last Week Tonight.” Charlie Rose presented Oliver with the award, noting that Oliver is as much a journalist as anyone in the news business, while also incredibly funny.

Upon accepting the honor, Oliver joked of Rose’s comments, “I didn’t hear what Charlie said; I can only assume it was bullshit.”

On the West Coast, at the Critics Choice Television Awards Schumer was awarded the honor of Best Actress in a Comedy Series for Inside Amy Schumer. Best Comedy Series honors, however, went out to HBO’s Silicon Valley, which also picked up the award for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for T.J. Miller. Tambor grabbed the honor for Best Actor in a Comedy Series for his Amazon Series, Transparent, and Allison Janney picked up best supporting actress for her series Mom.

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart won best Talk Show, Archer was named Best Animated Series. Outside of the specific comedy awards, some of the series that are not considered comedies for award purposes, but certainly dip into comedy and dark comedy were recognized in the drama categories. Olive Kitteridge brought awards for the series, as well as performers Frances McDormand and Bill Murray, Lorraine Toussaint got a drama award for her role in Orange is the New Black, and Better Call Saul actors Bob Odenkirk and Jonathan Banks took home awards.
