When David Javerbaum, former executive producer and head writer of The Daily Show, created the Twitter account @TheTweetOfGod five years ago, he did not think much of it. Today, the wildly popular account has nearly two million followers and has spawned a new Broadway play, An Act of God.

An Act of God, starring Jim Parsons as our Lord, has sold out previews and received a lot of buzz in anticipation of its official opening tonight. Javerbaum wrote the script for the play, which is directed by Joe Mantello.

In an interview with WBUR Boston, Javerbaum, who currently works as a writer for The Late Late Show with James Corden, said he never imagined the Twitter account would lead to this high-profile stage.

“Whatever happens I will be very happy with it. This has been so much further than I could have possibly ever imagined when I came up with this stupid idea a few years ago. It’s really amazing. I would say that I’m blessed, but I know better.”

The tweets, which have earned a lot of praise for their comedy, also has a broader message, according to Javerbaum the Creator. “People should maybe think about looking to each other to get themselves out of the problems they’ve caused, and maybe stop looking to God. For example, I think most of the resistance to accept climate change is because people deep down in their heads think, ‘Oh, God will take care of it.’ That to me is an example of the belief in God really doing incalculable harm.”
