Melissa Rivers: Kathy Griffin Sh*t On My Mother’s Legacy
During an interview at the 92nd Street Y to promote her new memoir, The Book of Joan: Tales of Mirth, Mischief, and Manipulation, Melissa Rivers was asked about Kathy Griffin and her brief stint co-hosting Fashion Police.
“Were you glad [Kathy Griffin] was a part of it or not?” interviewer Hoda Kotb asked. Melissa paused for a minute, before asking, “Is anyone recording anything?” to laughs from the audience. At first, Melissa simply said that the pairing “was not a match, on a lot of levels.” Following this more diplomatic statement, Melissa went further, saying, “My biggest complaint was the feeling that she kind of shit all over my mother’s legacy in her statement on leaving… That’s how I felt… That was my takeaway, by calling the comedy and the style of it old-fashioned. I understand you’re trying to save yourself, but don’t crap all over my mother to do it.”
Melissa did not appear interested in starting a feud, concluding, “As a professional, that was her choice, that’s what she did — no harm, no foul, moving on.”
Griffin quit Fashion Police after a two-month stint replacing Joan, who died in September. Griffin said in a statement, “I do not want to use my comedy to contribute to a culture of unattainable perfectionism and intolerance towards difference. I want to help women, gay kids, people of color, and anyone who feels underrepresented to have a voice and a LAUGH.”
No response thus far from the Griffen camp following Melissa’s comments yet.
