Slate vs Amy Schumer and Bailey Jay

It’s been just over two weeks since Diane Sawyer interviewed Bruce Jenner, and every major media publication in the world had something to say about it. It’s been almost three weeks since Amy Schumer interviewed Bailey Jay and as far as we know, nobody has called Bailey Jay a hero, and at least one publication– Slate– took a strong stance denouncing the interview.
Bailey Jay is a transgender woman who works in the adult entertainment industry. Bailey Jay’s appearances on SiriusXM’s OpieRadio Show with her friend Jim Norton have not only been fun but informative and have taught acceptance to an audience that would never respond to any amount of PC lecturing.
Bailey’s appearance on Inside Amy Schumer was a breath of fresh air in a week stale with the Bruce Jenner reality show bait and switch hype. Bailey does not beg for our acceptance in the interview or in her life. She is cool and comfortable with herself. Amy and Bailey hung out as two equals, discussing matters of sexually without fear or pretense. That’s being truly progressive for its own sake.
Apparently not everyone agreed. Shortly after the interview took place, Slate Magazine’s J. Bryan Lowder called out Schumer and Jay calling Schumer transphobic and the interview a “clumsy, contextually clueless, cringe-inducing….blunt force mess.” Lowder was concerned that Bailey Jay’s comfort with her sexuality and her life might harm “the majority of trans women” who are fighting against sexual scrutiny. Publications like Bustle, and Out disagree.
