Bill Maher’s Mother’s Day Message To Helicopter Parents

Mother’s Day is still 2 weeks away, but Bill Maher addressed the issue of “helicopter” versus “free range” parents on “Real Time” on HBO. Maher admits he’s a childless adult, but feels that gives him some perspective on the subject.

In his “New Rules” segment, the “Real Time” host describes how helicopter parents, the moms and dads who oversee every aspect of their kids’ lives into adulthood, are more like Secret Service agents. Or at least more like what the country needs when it comes to Secret Service agents. He also mentioned the case of the mom and dad in Silver Spring, Maryland who have had their kids picked up by the cops and detained until midnight after the police were alerted that the 10 and 6 year olds were spotted walking home from a neighborhood park by themselves at 5pm in the evening. The parents were charged with neglect.

Maher didn’t understand why this was a matter for 9-1-1. Especially since it didn’t involve a clown’s dick being exposed. He cited two studies. One that shows that 90% of a kid’s leisure time is spent at home (fattening them up) and another that claims that the more a child is given some freedom and encouraged to be on his or her own, the happier and more creative they become as they get older. Or in Bill Maher’s words, “Let the little bastards breathe a little.”
