Netflix announced today a brand new Ricky Gervais project! Ricky Gervais will write, direct and co-star in  “Special Correspondents” which will premiere sometime next year.

The new film stars Eric Bana as a radio journalist who’s career has hit a dead end because of his ego and his self-destructive lifestyle. In order to keep his news gig, he has to come up with something quick. He and and his producer start reporting from a war front. The only problem is there’s no war and there’s no front. It’s Bana’s character hiding out above a Spanish restaurant in the middle of Manhattan faking his radio wartime broadcasts.

Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said, “Special Correspondents is classic Ricky Gervais; smart social satire with heart. It’s the kind of great grown-up comedy that studios rarely make anymore, one that’s perfect for Netflix members around the world.”

Ricky Gervais said working with Netflix is the part of the evolution of entertainment. “Having shaken up the TV industry, Netflix is about to do the same to Hollywood. It’s great to be part of the changing future. Ted Sarandos is the new Godfather of entertainment and he made me an offer I couldn’t refuse.”

This is a return to the director’s chair for Ricky Gervais. He’s has directed several episodes of his series, “The Office”, “Derek”, “Extras” and “Life’s Too Short”, plus the feature comedies, “The Invention of Lying” and “Cemetery Junction”.

The streaming service already carries Ricky Gervais’ “Derek” series and the new one hour “Derek” special which premiered last Friday.
