Michael Keaton, Mike O’Brien Recreate The “Unpopular To Prom Queen” Movie Genre On SNL…With a Twist

This weekend’s Saturday Night Live featured a new “Michael O’Brien Picture”. The digital short was a homage to the teen romance movie gimmick off the popular guy in school making a bet that he can turn a school nobody into someone equally popular like in the Freddie Prinze / Rachael Leigh Cook movie, “She’s All That”. However in this case, instead of a nerdy girl, the target is nerdy adult male teacher, Mr. Osterberg played by SNL host Michael Keaton. Mike O’Brien appears in his film as the big man on campus, Eddie.

Mike O’Brien captures every sentimental cliche in “Prom Queen”. There’s the obligatory scene of Eddie taking off Mr. Osterberg’s glasses. Usually that scene finds our leading man awestruck at the beauty hiding beneath thin framed glasses. Not in this case. Eddie puts them right back on Mr. Osterberg’s face. There’s also the math teacher accidentally hearing that he’s the “loser” involved in the cruel bet and the slow motion reveal of his make-over.

For anyone who believes in the love and romance between a student and a teacher, this SNL short is for you.
