Update: The Oscars Ignore Joan Rivers. Here’s The Explanation The Academy Gave

UPDATE:  The Academy releases statement explaining why Joan Rivers was excluded from in memorium.

In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, an Oscar rep explained the decision to not include the iconic comedian. “Joan Rivers is among the many worthy artists and filmmakers we were unfortunately unable to feature in the In Memoriam segment of this year’s Oscar show,” reads the statement. “She is, however, included in our In Memoriam gallery on Oscar.com.”

We looked for it but haven’t found it yet.  We think we’ll stick with Bobby Cannavale’s twitter response which you can see below.

Every year the Academy Awards leaves someone out of the In Memorium and people get upset. This year they forgot several people but the most glaring  was Joan Rivers.  Some people on social media felt that maybe it was because Joan wasn’t really in the movies, but the “movie standard” to get into the In Memorium isn’t all that rigorous, and in any event, Joan meets the standard. She directed  Billy Crystal’s “Rabbit Test” in 1978, had a supporting role in Mel Brook’s Space Balls, had several cameos and small roles in films like the Muppet Movie and    ,  and was the subject of a critically acclaimed documentary.  But perhaps her largest contribution to the Academy was her red carpet coverage for years, which changed the Academy Awards event forever.  The red carpet coverage now lasts longer than the event itself and is an important part of the night.

Also left out were Taylor Negron, who has more movie roles than many of the people included in the montage combined, Elaine Strich and Jan Hooks.  Elaine Stritch was the focus of the documentary A Piece of Work two years ago and appeared in the films Farewell to Arms, September, Out to Sea, Trippendorf’s Tribe, Small Time Crooks, Autumn in New York, Romance & Cigarettes, and ParaNorman.  Along with 8 years on SNL, Jan Hooks starred in Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, Wildcats, Batman Returns, and Simon Birch.

Not to worry Joan, twitter remembered.  Your people love you.
