Rosie O’Donnell had a screening of her new stand up documentary “Rosie O’Donnell: A Heartfelt Stand Up” at the Athena Film Festival awards ceremony on Saturday. She took the opportunity to explain why she’s leaving The View for the second time and to lob some verbal grenades at faux war hero, NBC’s Brian Williams.

Rosie confirmed that stress is responsible for her decision to stop co-hosting The View. She said she’s leaving on her doctor’s recommendation.  Her new special airing on HBO this Saturday includes a stand up performance and a discussion of heart disease in women. She told the Hollywood Reporter that she wanted to make sure the special was medically correct so she didn’t end up like Brian Williams. She said, “‘Cause you know sometimes like Brian Williams I can’t remember. No, really, I, you know. Come on. I was in a helicopter that got hit by an RPG. I forgot I wasn’t in it. I wrote and directed A League of Their Own. Wait a minute, I was just in it. Shit, I forgot.”

Rosie did say she appreciated the Brian Williams story during the current news cycle. “Remember when Walter Cronkite was the most trusted man in the world. He took off his glasses and said this war is wrong and the Vietnam War ended a few months later? And now we’ve got Brian f—ing Williams saying I discovered electricity. Maybe this will distract from my divorce.”

Rosie O’Donnell also took the opportunity to mention the NBC anchorman in her opening remarks at her screening. She said, “Maybe this is what’s the problem in my relationships. I see someone and I make shit up like Brian Williams…I escaped on 9/11 from the Twin Towers. No, I didn’t; I got mixed up. F-ing Lance Armstrong liar.”

“Rosie O’Donnell: A Heartfelt Stand Up” airs Saturday at 10pm et on HBO.
