George Lucas Hates Sci-Fi

Power Of Story Panel - 2015 Sundance Film FestivalIn the greatest grandpa got a microphone moment at Sundance, George Lucas played a game of confuse everyone. Highlights include:

Declaring “I really have no interest in science fiction at all” (Star Wars nerds wept and then recalled that stupid midi-chlorians stuff from the prequels)

Movies are too circus? (“If you go into Star Wars and see what’s going on there, there’s a lot more substance than circus.”) Apparently, he does not like movies built around effects (surprise), or with too much plot or character development “I don’t like character driven dramas, I don’t like plots.” So what is circus? Apparently violent scenes with too much blood (“Let’s see how much blood comes out when he splats”) because when you stab someone with a sword, why have blood? Then he came back and said “even though I started out as a non-story guy, I’m much more of a story guy now.”

He wanted to be a Cinéma vérité documentary filmmaker when starting out.

He doesn’t trust anyone over 30.

He hates studios because they treat directors like plumbers (not because his first Lucasfilm under Disney “Strange Magic” just tanked, but he will sell his life’s work for four billion dollars.)

He continues the prequel’s tradition of using the same words twice when speaking (“a lot of the hype on new technology is overhyped”).
