Amazon Studios Goes Big Screen With Original Films for Theater Runs

Amazon Studios is ready to go big time on the big screen, with a big expansion to its movie division. Taking over your tv and movie viewing experience from inside your home isn’t enough anymore. Amazon is now giong to be competing with other film studios for time and space in movie theaters, by developing as many as 12 original films a year, with production starting soon.
Amazon’s plan includes acquiring original scripts for theatrical movie releases. The films would have an unprecedented quick turn over to Amazon’s online subscription service, Prime Instant Video, for release in just 4 to 8 weeks. Normally it could take anywhere from 39 to 52 weeks for a film released in theaters to make to video services.
Roy Price, Vice President, Amazon Studios, talked about the company’s film plan. “We look forward to expanding our production efforts into feature films. Our goal is to create close to twelve movies a year with production starting later this year. Not only will we bring Prime Instant Video customers exciting, unique, and exclusive films soon after a movie’s theatrical run, but we hope this program will also benefit filmmakers, who too often struggle to mount fresh and daring stories that deserve an audience.”
Amazon Studios just pulled off a major victory with multiple Golden Globe wins for its original series, “Transparent” starring Jeffrey Tambor, including “Best Comedy Series”.
