Comedy is Invading the National Geographic Channel
The National Geographic Channel has never been known as a TV destination for laughs. Unless you thought “Dooms Day Preppers” was a sitcom or videos of rhinos were hilarious. NatGeo is now getting into the comedy business with a new project for 2015. The network is going to work on a new series called “History of the World” which according to Variety, “promises to use sketch comedy, animation, puppetry, documentary and archival footage to explore weighty questions such as how the world came about, the evolution of man and the origins of spirituality, money, leisure time, sports, hygiene and entertainment. It’s slated for a fall premiere.”
“History of the World” comes from John Altschuler and Dave Krinsky. These guys co-created “Silicon Valley” along with Mike Judge for HBO. They also worked as showrunners for Judge’s “King of the Hill”. They also wrote the Will Ferrell comedy, “Blades of Glory”.
NatGeo’s head of original programming, Tim Pastore said, “It is definitely outside of the box historically for National Geographic. We believe that it has the potential to move into all sorts of new genres, and I think at the core, we’ve always been stylistically groundbreaking, pushing convention, new models, new formats of how to tell story. Why not get a history lesson from the guys who wrote ‘Blades of Glory?'”
“History of the World” is expected to debut this Fall.
