Professor Uses ‘Seinfeld’ To Teach Students About Psychiatry

Anthony Tobia, an associate professor of psychiatry at Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School has developed a teaching aid for his med students. He uses “Seinfeld” as the basis for “Psy-feld,” designed to help medical students identify and discuss psychiatric disorders. Tobia told NJ.com why the show works perfectly for his program. He said, “You have a very diverse group of personality traits that are maladaptive on the individual level”.
Twice a week, medical students in the hospital’s psychiatric rotation are assigned to watch the 6 pm episode of “Seinfeld” on TBS. Then they discuss different psychological conditions they notice in the characters during the episodes, like narcissism, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and schizophrenia. Then that helps them make diagnoses.
So he’s suffering from acute paranoia and yada yada yada…chopped his girlfriend up.
