So How Bad Was Da Bears Fired GM?
Details are coming out about sacked GM Phil Emery and his disappointing three years at the helm of the Chicago Bears. After firing coach Lovie Smith for a 10-6 season, the defensive coordinator volunteered to stay on despite being friends with Smith. So Emery asked him to interview the three head coaching candidates. The DC’s ranking?
Runaway favorite: Bruce Arians, now coach of the 11-5 Arizona Cardinals. He was also 10-6 last year, and the previous year he took cancer-battling Chuck Pagano’s Colts to the playoffs with a 9-3 record and was named AP Coach Of The Year.
Second pick: Darrell Bevell, offensive coordinator of the defending champion Seahawks. He’s pretty much responsible for Russell Wilson, and his offense is in the top-11 in both scoring and yardage this season.
Distant third: Marc Trestman, some dude who won in another country with an extra player and forward motion on a 40-acre field.
And guess who Phil took? Yep, and that coordinator was Rod Marinelli, who quit the job and became a line coach in Dallas. He was promoted to coordinator prior to the Cowboys’ 12-4 season.
Anyway, could be worse: folks are tossing around Josh McDaniels’ name in San Fran and Atlanta, and that’s the cat who drafted Tebow.
