Five Questions With Mike Cannon: One of New York’s Funniest Finalists

This Saturday, as part of the New York Comedy Festival, Caroline’s on Broadway will hold their annual New York’s Funniest contest. The yearly competition searches among New York City’s younger comics, to find who is New York’s funniest.
Monday, NY’s Funniest contestant Mike Cannon stopped by SiriusXM’s Ron and Fez show, and we grabbed him after the show to ask him five questions. You can follow him on twitter @IamMikeCannon and see him this Saturday at Carolines at 4pm. You can also visit his website, mikecannoncomedy.com.
Here are his 5 questions.
The IBang: What is your favorite club to perform in, in New York City?
Mike Cannon: My favorite club to perform in is Stand Up NY comedy club on the Upper West Side. And Carolines. They both have started me out. But I do have a podcast and a video web series at Stand Up New York. So I”m partial.
The IBang: Do you have a favorite dive bar in New York?
Mike Cannon: My favorite NYC dive bar…that’s a good question. I dont even go to bars that much anymore, because I have a girlfriend and a do comedy so my life is bars, and I already have met somebody, so the point of going to a bar and spending money is moot. But I would say anything on Macdougal Street. There used to be a cool place right across from the Greenwich Village Comedy Club. But it changed names every six minutes.
The IBang: Who are your comedy close friends?
Mike Cannon: Chris DiStefano is probably my best friend in the business, he’s been all over the place he’s fantastic. Matteo Lane, he’s a delight. He’s super funny. Joe List, Mark Normand, all these guys…I look up to them, to be honest and its cool to be able to do shows with them.
The IBang: What is your favorite lesser-known comedy club or venue in NY?
Mike Cannon: Kabin on Thursday nights at 9:30 on the Lower East Side, is one of the best in terms of the grand populace, little known. But in terms of comedy popularity, it certainly has its name out there. It’s routinely packed and has some of the best names in the city, and its run by a delightful woman, Rebecca.
The IBang: Who is the best New York comic that is underrated.
Mike Cannon: My favorite comedian in New York and probably the country right now is Kurt Metzger. He’s just an absolute brilliant genius and I love watching him and he’s one of the best writers out there.
