Chris Rock Monologue Kills and Offends on SNL

Chris Rock shook up the Saturday Night Live monologue last night. He came to the stage and instantly owned it, with talk about terrorism, controversial comedy about the Boston Marathon, sharp criticism of the new “freedom tower” (does this building duck? what are they they thinking?) and American commercialism (how many years till we get 9 dollar and 11 cent shrimp dinners on 9/11 and “free at last” sales on MLK Day?).
It was everything you want in an SNL monologue. Sharply critical and hilariously funny. We can only imagine that anyone who was offended last night was more offended at just hearing the topics, rather than the material itself. Nothing Rock said was disrespectful to victims of either tragedy. On the contrary, Rock’s criticism of the decision to put the tower in the same spot where the twin towers stood seemed more respectful of the victims than some of the decisions taking place at the 9/11 memorial, where earlier this year there were plans for a full bar and gourmet food in the 9/11 memorial cafe.
Listen to the Rock’s material and let us know what you think in the comments, but we’re saying congratulations to Rock for a great performance and for shaking up Saturday Night.
