VICE Uncovers Long Lost Pilot By A Simpsons Writer

John Swartzwelder was a legendary writer in the first decade of “The Simpsons.” Most of his episodes are considered classics, such as “Itchy & Scratchy Land,” “Homer At The Bat,” “Krusty Gets Kancelled,” “Radioactive Man,” and “Two Cars in Every Garage and Three Eyes on Every Fish.” But in 1996, he made a pilot for a western comedy, “Pistol Pete,” about a moronic sideshow actor portraying a dime-store novel character who becomes marshall for Abilene. Among the big names in the pilot is Brian Doyle-Murray, playing the mayor who believes the novels are real, and director John Rich, who actually helmed 14 episodes of “Gunsmoke” back in the day. Obviously, the pilot was never picked up, but it’s recently appeared online just this week.
