The Filtered Excellence: October 6, 2011
Bob Geldof once asked us, Where is the filtered excellence!? Its right here. Here are this weeks picks of what to WATCH, what to DO what to TRY what to READ what to LISTEN TO and more:
*************
WATCH THIS:
Bored to Death: We love Bored to Death, and can’t wait for Monday’s season 3 premier. It still amazes us that Ted Danson, Jason Schwartzman and Zach Galifinackis are all in a television comedy series, and we couldn’t be happier. If you missed the first seasons, what are you waiting for? Catch up now! Season 3 premiers on Monday October 10 at 9pm. HBO.
George Harrison: Living in the Material World: Not only will Martin Scorsese’s new documentary on the late George Harrison be screening at The Village East Cinema, but you can also catch it all week on HBO. The film promises to “take viewers on the musical and spiritual voyage that was George Harrison’s life. Visit HBO.com for times.
Penn and Teller Tell a Lie: Check out this brand new series starring and created by the always amazing Penn & Teller. The premise is easy– they’ll make seven outrageous claims. Six are true and one is a big fat lie. It premiered Wednesday but the first episode will re-air this weekend and is on our must watch list. It airs on the Discovery Channel Saturday October 8 at 10pm, Sunday October 9 at 12am.
The Tree of Life: Terrence Malick’s latest film comes to DVD this week and its much more than a film– is more of a visually stunning journey through ‘life’ itself. The experience that is Tree of Life really belongs on a big screen with big sound, but if you missed it or just want to have your very own copy (or if you’ve been waiting for your chance to experience Tree of Life in a ‘heightened state’), now is your chance to check it out. Especially if you have a kick ass home theater system. Available on DVD or Blu Ray.
Garland Jeffries on Letterman: This Friday night (10-7) Garland will be the musical guest on ‘Late Show With David Letterman’ playing a track off his critically acclaimed new CD, ‘The King Of In Between’. Oh and by the way, Listen to That. Other guests on that night will be Bryan Cranston and Jeff Altman. Not bad right?

Every Thing On It: Everything On It by Shel Silverstein: Its been 12 years since his passing so you can imagine how surprised we were to see that a brand new Shel Silverstein book hit the shelves this week. Everything On It contains more than 130 never before published poems and drawings which have been carefully selected by his family.
LISTEN TO THIS
The Lost Notebooks of Hank Williams: Whether you’re a long time Hank fan, or just starting to check him out, this brand new tribute to Hank Williams should be on your list. Thirteen great artists who were heavily influenced by Hank performed 12 of his never released lyrical compositions, which have been put to music to create these amazing collaborative songs. Highlights include songs performed by Bob Dylan, Levon Helm, Sheryl Crow and Jack White.
DO THIS
Jon Brion at Le Poisson Rouge: If you are in or anywhere near New York, you are in luck. Jon Brion just added another date at the Bleecker Street club in New York City. The chance to see the brilliant singer songwriter perform in a small club is just too exciting to pass up. Oh and if you don’t already know, among other things, Jon Brion is the singing/songwriting/composing genius behind some of the best music in film including Magnolia, Punch Drunk Love, Synechdoche NY, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and I Heart Huckabees. Sunday October 9 at 8pm. 158 Bleecker Street.
TRY THIS
Tatuaje Cigars: People are always looking for cigar recommendations, so here’s one of our absolute favorites. Whether you’re buying a gift, or you smoke them yourself, you have to check out the Tatuaje line of cigars. They’re reasonably priced, and they are exceptionally smooth and full flavored. They make a great gift because many smokers have never tried them, and they’ll be thrilled to find a new go-to smoke. We’ve never seen anyone not love this entire line of cigars. We particularly like the Havana VI series with the red band, and the brown labeled Seleccion de Cazador. If you can get your hands on a any of the Reserva line, even better. Visit their website to find out where you can find them. Just don’t ask us how to pronounce it. www.tatuajecigars.com
