NFL Concussion Crisis Is Now Mainstream: Will Smith’s Doing A Movie About It

willsmith_newVariety reports the Fresh Prince will star in an upcoming drama about the NFL’s concussion controversy, directed by Peter Landesman. The film, based on a GQ article called “Game Brain,” will follow the story of Dr. Bennet Omalu, the Nigerian-born forensic neuropathologist who discovered a high number of football players found to have CTE. Smith reportedly left a Legendary Pictures project to take this role.

If Omalu’s name sounds familiar, it’s probably because he was in the PBS documentary “League of Denial.” He was the doctor who discovered CTE in former Steeler Mike Webster and was later stonewalled by the NFL. The book that Mark Fainaru-Wada and Steve Fainaru wrote alongside their documentary is also in plans to be made into a movie, as well as an independent film named “Game Time Decision” starring Isiah Washington.
