Gay Man Buys Himself a New Michael Sam Fan on eBay

fez2Openly gay radio host Fez Marie Whatley is the proud new owner of the fan loyalty of Jared Kalinowski.  And it only cost him $750.

“Yes, I did purchase the loyalty of another human being, but at least it’s going to a good cause” Whatley said after winning an eBay auction that put the “fandom” of a frustrated and disappointed Cleveland Browns fan up for sale to the highest bidder. The co-host of the popular Ron and Fez Show on SiriusXM’s Raw Dog channel won the auction with a bid of $750. The auction started the bidding at under $20.

According to Whatley, when he heard that former Cleveland Browns fan Jared Kalinowski was auctioning off his fan loyalty, he saw an opportunity to get more support for the St. Louis Rams and their recent draft pick Michael Sam, the first openly gay player in the NFL. And he was determined to win.  He said, “there was a time when no one thought they would ever see two gay men celebrating on ESPN by sharing a kiss, and now me and Jared are going to root root root for the Rams together!” Fez Whatley, who grew up as a Tampa Bay Buccaneers fan, switched his own allegiance to St. Louis after the team selected Sam as the 249th pick in the draft. And now, he’s going into the 2014 NFL season with twice the support.

As part of his eBay auction, Kalinowski has promised to buy the gear of his new team, support them, and attend at least one home game a year for the next three years and he is ready to keep his end of the bargain, and even excited about his new team.

There will always be some sadness that I did not get to see the Browns win a championship, but I am very excited about rooting for the St Louis Rams. The Rams have a very solid defense and an offense on the rise. You add that to the fact the management is so forward acting in drafting the first openly gay and my enthusiasm is through the roof. I will be proud to cheer on the Rams to victory!

It was also the NFL draft that led Jared Kalinowski to give up cheering for his beloved Browns after 30 years and put his loyalty up for auction on eBay. While Cleveland drafting Johnny “Football” Manziel gave him a glimmer of hope for the team, it was the Browns management’s decision to not address wide receiver issues that was the last straw for Kalinowski. Browns receiver Josh Gordon is facing a potential suspension and with Cleveland’s number two go-to receiver nursing a broken arm, the team’s management (or as Kalinowski calls them “megalomaniacs”) let several potential receivers get away during the draft. That was the moment for Kalinowski that the embarrassment of being a Browns fan became too much to bear.

At least, now he has a new team to root for and $750 for his trouble.  Go Rams!
