Ferguson confirmed speculation when he broke the news this afternoon that he will be stepping down as host of the Late Late Show.  He broke the news to his studio audience during the taping of his show, which will be broadcast at 12:37-1:37 AM, ET/PT.

Ferguson said, “CBS and I are not getting divorced, we are ‘consciously uncoupling,’ but we will still spend holidays together and share custody of the fake horse and robot skeleton, both of whom we love very much.”

Since its debut in 2005, The Late Late Show has been helmed by Ferguson, and received critical acclaim for the show’s unique approach to late night television. The show earned a Peabody Award in 2009, and Ferguson was nominated for an Emmy in 2006.

Ferguson will be leaving in December.  It is not yet known who will take over his spot, or if the Late Late Show will continue on without him.
