Emma Stone and Jonah Hill to Create Original Comedy Series For Netflix

Comedy powerhouse Netflix has just grabbed another original comedy series.
According to Variety, Netflix has given dark comedy Maniac, starring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill a straight to series order. Jonah Hill plays an institutionalized mental patient who lives a fantasy life in his dreams. Cary Fukanaga will direct and co-executive produce with the two stars. Maniac is based on a Norwegian series. Stone and Hill first collaborated in the 2007 hit comedy Superbad.
Maniac will join Santa Clarita Diet which will star Drew Barrymore, and an unnamed Nick Stoller comedy which received series orders this month. Santa Clarita Diet centers on married real estate agents living in the suburbs of Los Angeles and will also star Timothy Olyphant. The unnamed Stoller series will follow a group of college friends approaching 40 whose group dynamic will change when one of the couples moves away.
Other current original comedy series at Netflix include the hit series BoJack Horseman which has been renewed for a third season, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt starring Ellie Kemper which debuts its second season in April, Grace and Frankie starring Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda which will air its second season in May. Master of None created by and starring Aziz Ansari, Judd Apatow produced Love and ensemble series Fuller House have each been renewed for second seasons. Other successful original comedy series for Netflix have included Bill Burr’s animated series F is For Family, Arrested Development, the Wet Hot American Summer prequel, W/ Bob and David, and two brand new series, Flaked and The Characters.
Netflix has done well back together comedic actors who have had successful collaborations in the past. Arrested Development, Fuller House, Wet Hot American Summer First Day of Camp, W/ Bob and David and even Kimmy Schmit all reunited successful comedy pairings or teams.
