This is an absolutely no class move. The Phillies aren’t going anywhere this year, so firing the manager serves zero purpose. Charlie Manuel is only the second manager in the organization’s history to ever win a World Series. At the very least, he should have been allowed to finish the season. Perhaps then, a back room deal could have been arranged to have him announce his “resignation.” That way, they could have brought him back at the start of the new season to publicly acknowledge all he’s done for them, and the fans could give him a few standing ovations and a warm send-off. As much as I love Ryne Sandberg as the possible next manager, Charlie deserves better treatment from the club he’s served so well.

Brian_Baker True..I agree that he deserves a fan-loving sendoff. The blame lies with Amaro and his shit decisions.

My favorite Phillies memories are all because of Charlie.  His firing was inevitable, but he will be absolutely missed in Philadelphia.  Virginia’s own!  We salute you

Ruben Amaro Jr was a failure as a player and a failure as a GM. He completely decimated what Pat Gillick put together. He talks out of the side of his neck. Everyone knew Sandberg was brought in to be Charlie’s successor. Should’ve let him do a victory lap like Bobby Cox. 1,000 wins warrants that.

I was trying to keep my interest in the team up during this depressing down period but I’ve lost a lot of respect with this move. I’m out

MikePal75 The Phillies are going to be a bad-to-mediocre team for a few years while they rebuild, so the fans will already be angry about it. What’s wrong with giving them something to feel good about by letting them give Charlie a nice send-off? This just stinks.

I don’t really get hating Amaro for firing Manuel.  What’s the benefit of letting him finish out the season?  Charlie is an adult, and I’m sure he saw it coming, and I doubt he feels raw about it.  It’s the nature of professional sports.
The advantage of letting Sandberg take over now is you have a window to watch how he does with the team before making a permanent decision.  Absolutely the right move.

Fucking fans blow. They don’t give the manager a chance to rebuild after bringing a World Series. Charlie is the best phils manager ever. Bill cowher would not be a Super Bowl champion coach if they fired him after two losing seasons in the middle of career with the steelers. Fuck u rubin.

He’ll be back again part way through next season. Look how many times Billy Martin was fired and brought back.

Class.  Respect.  Dude, 42 games.   I’m sad with my team today.  Worse than I’ve been watching them lose all season.
