The Comedian Who Changed My Life Is Richard Pryor
The Comedian Who Changed My Life is a series where comedians talk about, you guessed it, the comedian who changed their life. This week, Eddie Pepitone tells us why he chose Richard Pryor as the comedian who changed his life.
The comedian who changed my life was Richard Pryor. I’ll tell you why. I saw one of Richard Pryor’s concert films, and I was so blown away by how much fun and how funny he was about so many different issues. It really was like a mindblowing experience; and the type of experience where I watched Pryor talk about race relations and you know, he would do the voices of white people, and the laughs were so deep. And he also was a comic that had such honesty and truthfulness, like talking about his own life, and it just gave me– twofold. It gave me the courage to talk about my own life on stage and realize that that’s where the really funny stuff comes from. And also just a pure unadulterated level of comedy, humor, absurdism that Pryor was able to put out on that stage. But it had a depth and a pathos to it, and to me that’s what really good stand up is. It isn’t this, just surface one liner thing thats kind of clever. It’s deep, deep, deep pathos within us that makes us just like tragedy juxtaposed againt comedy. So he changed my whole life.
