You Can Help Kids In Need, Like Our Son

Thanks so much for the opportunity to share our Thanksgiving pics with you guys.

Brody has had two open heart surgeries. At two weeks and 19 months. He is doing fantastic and you would never know he is a heart baby. He got to the coach pitch little league chairmanship game this year. They lost 10 to 11 but what a game!! His little brother  just started t-ball.

Dr. Redmond Burke (surgeon) and his amazing team were phenomenal. From the moment we walked into Miami Children’s Hospital they treated our son like he was there own. It was an amazingly tough and soul searching experience for our family.

We were at MCH for his first surgery on Thanksgiving of 2008 and I remember thinking how separated we were from our families and friends. It was agonizing not knowing if Brody was going to make it or not.

I thought to myself if Brody makes it we are going to come back here every Thanksgiving and give our thanks to the doctors and nurses. We also wanted to show the new mothers and fathers with heart babies that there is hope. At that point in your life…..that’s all you can ask for is hope and a chance. My wife came up with the idea of “care bags” for the parents.

It has become our favorite holiday family tradition and something we look forward to every year.

The conduit that Dr. Burke sowed into Brody’s heart does not grow with him, therefore he out grew the fist conduit and they had to put in a bigger one at 19 months. The second conduit was from a 40 year old male organ donor and may be big enough to get him threw adulthood. If he would not have had the organ donation Dr. Burke would have used a swine or bovine conduit. They work but do not compare to a human donor conduit. If you could just ask the Ron and Fez family to check the organ donation box. Let them know it’s not just for the big stuff like kidneys and livers it helps out the little guys too.
