The comedy world’s been abuzz for the past few days after it was announced that Larry David will be returning for a ninth season of Curb Your Enthusiasm. Season nine of the hit HBO show has been a long time coming, with five years having passed since it left the air. HBO had left an open invitation to David to return to the show whenever he felt up to it, and he has finally taken them up on their offer after spending some time on Broadway (in Fish in the Dark) and collaborating with SNL.

The Hollywood Reporter caught up with Curb’s executive producer, David Mandel, to get some details on the upcoming return. Mandel is thrilled to finally be coming back to the series he loves, and revealed that fellow Curb veteran writers, directors and producers Jeff Schaffer and Alec Berg will also be rejoining the crew.

Among the information revealed in the interview:

– David is the one who reached out to Mandel, Schaffer and Berg, so it was Larry David himself — not HBO or other outside forces — who prompted the show’s return.

– Mandel works on Veep and Berg on Silicon Valley and Barry, so it’s unclear if any of the three (who all took turns directing previous episodes of the show) will be available to step back into that role— which Mandel says isn’t a problem, as “Larry moves sort of slowly and methodically, it’s not like they’re going to shoot next week.”

– Mandel says that “This is a whole new Larry,” referring to David’s insistence on making a formal statement on the show’s return, something he never normally does.

– David and Jeff Garlin are starting to write “pretty much right now.”
