Who is On Late Night Tonight in Comedy: Week of July 27, 2020

Who’s on Late Night Tonight in Comedy?

As to be expected during the hot, rerun days of Summer, our late night hosts will be coming and going on vacation and it will be a rare event to have all the late night talkers doing new shows at the same time until the new Fall season begins. About half of our late night shows are on vacation right now, but at some point, we expect all the hosts to acknowledge the passing of the great Regis Philbin who passed away this past weekend at age 88.

All of these late night hosts can rightfully admit to being influenced by the King of Daytime Talk in some way or another or at the very least, they had the fun-loving “Reeg” as a guest because no one knew how to go with the bit better than the iconic Regis Philbin.

Looking at this week in late night, Trevor Noah has new episodes of the Daily Social Distancing Show on Comedy Central, but the CBS shows (Colbert & Corden) are off this week. NBC is giving us brand new editions of the Tonight Show and Late Night, but Jimmy Kimmel Live will be in repeats.

It’s odd that JKL will be airing reruns this week because we thought that was the reason why Kimmel was having so many guest hosts filling in for him; to keep giving us new shows. However, it is nice that they are considering Kimmel’s at-home staff and crew and giving them some time off.

Speaking of Jimmy Kimmel’s guest hosts, those will be the shows that are being used for Best Of Jimmy Kimmel Live  episodes this week. Monday night will feature the episode when Whitney Cummings filled in. Tuesday is a replay of Billy Eichner as guest host. Wednesday night is an encore of when Sean Hayes filled in for Kimmel and interviewed his best friend Jason Bateman. Who knew those two were real life besties!? Thursday is a rerun of Anthony Anderson as guest host and Friday night, the JKL repeat has George Lopez sitting in Jimmy’s chair.

As for new programming this week, in a non-comedy highlight, watch for Senator Kamala Harris on Late Night with Seth Meyers on Monday. Senator Harris is on that very short list of possible Joe Biden running mates and this is the week that Mighty Joe is expected to make that big announcement. Seth may be talking to the next VP of the USA on Monday night.

Tuesday night, Saturday Night Live co-head writer and Weekend Update co-anchor Michael Che is on the Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon. We may get some info from Che about the new fall season of SNL and if it plans on starting on time. He may also tell us about his new HBO Max sketch comedy show that he just signed a deal for as its creator. Either way, we’ll get a hilarious remote interview with one of SNL‘s Best.

Wednesday evening, Jimmy Fallon has a remote interview with British comic Jack Whitehall. Normally, we’d guess that Jack will be giving us the British perspective on the Coronavirus lockdown, but he’s been in isolation with his supermodel girlfriend Roxy Horner in a sunny resort. So, Jack will probably fill us in on trying to live through and bare that hellish quarantine.

Another name for Wednesday this week could be “Tig Notaro Night.” Fans can get a double-dose of Tig in late night on Wednesday. First, she’ll be the Facetime guest on a new episode of Conan from Los Angeles’ premiere comedy and music nightclub, Largo at the Coronet. Then stay awake because Tig will also be a guest on a replay of A Little Late with Lilly Singh at 1:30am on NBC.

Thursday is packed with late night comedy. Here’s a few of the highlights. Seth Rogen will be speaking remotely with Jimmy Fallon on the Tonight Show about his new HBO Max movie, “An American Pickle.” It’s a sentimental comedy that tells the Rip Van Winkle type story of when Seth Rogen’s character, an immigrant named Herschel Greenbaum, falls in a pickle vat in 1920’s America and pops out 100 years later. Seth plays both Herschel and his great-grandson, Ben. “An American Pickle” premieres on the HBO Max streaming service on Thursday, August 6th.

Also on Thursday, Dan Levy, the adorably funny producer, writer and comedy actor who co-created “Schitt’s Creek” with his father, the equally adorable comedy legend Eugene Levy, will be on Late Night with Seth Meyers to announce he’s relaunching his unisex line of eyeglass frames, D.L. Eyewear. By the way, “Schitt’s Creek,” which just finished its 6th and final season, is currently the odds-on favorite to win Best Comedy Series at this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards. The nominations will be announced this Tuesday, July 28th.

On Friday, Bill Maher will be back with new episodes of Real Time on HBO after a multi-week summer hiatus. The only question is where will Bill be doing his show from? Shortly after Maher & company went on vacation at the end of June, HBO announced it was looking for a way for Bill Maher to safely leave his backyard (where Bill did Real Time during the lockdown) and bring the show either back to the studio or some other secure location that’s safe for the talent and crew.

Maher may either go back to his empty studio with no audience and just enough technical help to get Real Time on the air like Fallon and the Tonight Show, or head to another empty venue that’s built for comedy, but isn’t in use, like “Conan at Largo at the Coronet.”

Obviously, we don’t want to see anyone in the entertainment industry lose their gigs to the pandemic shutdown, but we love Conan’s idea of keeping a leading comedy venue functional and working while Largo is unable to book a regular schedule of shows. Even if you’re not a big shot late night talk show host like Conan O’Brien, you can also help out these clubs and theaters by lending your name to www.SaveOurStages.com.

“Save Our Stages” is an effort to make sure that comedy and music venues receive financial aid from the government during this crisis like other small businesses have already. You can read more about the “Save Our Stages” efforts and the two bills being introduced to Congress in a piece on the IBang by Earl Douglas called “Save Our Stages: Help Live Comedy Venues Survive (and it won’t cost you any money to help).”

There’s one other way you can help to get our comedy clubs back up and working again.

WEAR A DAMN MASK! Have a nice week.
