Welcome back to “Who is On Late Night Tonight in Comedy?” on the IBang. This week, we start things off with a late night talk show host who will be paying tribute to a fictional late night talk show host.
On Monday night, the Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon will be saluting HBO’s “The Larry Sanders Show“. NBC and the Tonight Show will continue Jimmy Fallon’s 5th anniversary celebration with a behind-the-scenes episode, where we’ll go backstage, plus see what happens on the guest couch when the cameras are off. This is all going to be done in the style of one of the most innovative series in television history, “The Larry Sanders Show“, the critically acclaimed and award winning sitcom created by Garry Shandling which premiered 27 years ago this August. Jimmy Fallon’s guests will include Tina Fey, Robert De Niro, Ben Stiller, animal expert Robert Irwin and musical guest Florida Georgia Line who will all participate in the staged tense, comedic scenes backstage at the Tonight Show in order to give the episode a “Larry Sanders” feel.
While the spirit and intent to honor Garry Shandling and his groundbreaking show may be there, but if you watch the promo (see it below) released by the Tonight Show for Monday’s salute, Fallon’s effort looks way too silly even for a parody of the original. The scenes where the curtain was pulled back on “The Larry Sanders Show” always had a high-strung edginess to them and “edgy” doesn’t exactly describe Fallon or the Tonight Show as it is now. It just shows you how talented Garry Shandling was to pull this off as his alter-ego Larry Sanders.
Also, here’s a heads up for this week, the CBS late-nighters are catching up on the vacation time some of the other hosts took last week. So there’s no new shows from Stephen Colbert and James Corden this week as we head into March. Other late show closings this week include Real Time with Bill Maher which is off for a week, but will return live Friday, March 8th at 10pm on HBO.
Conan O’Brien is back from his vacation and has plenty of comedy guests ready to sit down with him for his new half-hour version of Conan. Monday, Ben Sinclair is Team Coco’s guest. Ben has had an amazing ride with his series “High Maintenance” which he created with Katja Blichfeld. The series featuring Ben as “The Guy”, a marijuana deliveryman interacting with different clients each episode, began as a web-series on Vimeo and now, it’s just entered its third season on HBO. Also this week, Conan will be hosting Deon Cole on Tuesday and Cedric the Entertainer on Wednesday.
Patton Oswalt is making the rounds this week in late night to promote the premiere of his hit sitcom, “A.P. Bio.” The series which stars Glenn Howerton as a reluctant high school teacher with Patton co-starring as his principal, premieres its 2nd season on Thursday, March 7th on NBC. Tuesday, you can see Patton Oswalt on Late Night with Seth Meyers along with Seth’s other guest that night, Heidi Gardner from Saturday Night Live, who has been making SNL her own hilarious showcase. Then on Wednesday, Patton will be on the Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon.
Wednesday, JKL has one of Jimmy Kimmel’s favorite guests returning. It’s a “Man Show” reunion when Adam Carolla returns to Jimmy Kimmel Live. Carolla and Kimmel were hosts of “The Man Show” on Comedy Central for 4 of the series 6 seasons beginning in 1999. Besides seeing the two old buddies getting together, it will be interesting to see if the issue of “blackface” comes up when Adam Carolla sits down with Jimmy Kimmel. It was on “The Man Show” where Kimmel would don blackface makeup to impersonate Utah Jazz star Karl Malone. We’ll see if that’s a topic of conversation during all the reminiscing on JKL on Wednesday. One comedian who would like to hear the issue come up is Nick Cannon. For more on this controversy regarding two late night hosts in particular, you can check out the IBang’s article, “Nick Cannon Calls Out Fallon, Kimmel Over Black Face,” where Cannon asks “Are These Your Kings of Late Night?”
Good news John Mulaney fans! There’s puh-lenty of Mulaney this week in late night. Thursday, John Mulaney is on the Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon where he always good for a memorable visit. Then on Friday, John Mulaney appears on a repeat episode of Late Night with Seth Meyers. Then on Saturday night, Mulaney hosts an all-new SNL. John Mulaney hosted Saturday Night Live just last season and it was the funniest episode of SNL – Season 43 by far. He must have really impressed his old boss Lorne Michaels because Mulaney is back again already this coming Saturday.
Have a great week and remember it’s never too late…to stay up and watch TV.
