Who is On Late Night Tonight in Comedy: Week of August 3, 2020

Who’s on Late Night Tonight in Comedy?

The dog days of August have arrived. And like most dogs, our late night talk show hosts are taking a break and laying under the porch to stay out of the heat. Actually, most of them are just on vacation this week, but they’ve left some great Best Of episodes with some excellent guests from the world of comedy for everyone to enjoy again or for the first time if you didn’t see the shows when they originally aired.

The Daily Show with Trevor Noah and the NBC late night shows (Fallon & Seth) will be all new this week with everyone else on a break. Jimmy Kimmel Live will be in repeats again this week, but it will be reruns featuring his great lineup of guest hosts.

Nikkik Glaser got amazing reviews for the night she sat in for Jimmy Kimmel and her episode will re-air on Monday evening this week. Nikki’s replay features an appearance by the hilarious Phoebe Robinson. Tuesday is an encore of Billy Eichner’s night in the Kimmel guest host chair with his guest Amy Schumer. Wednesday’s JKL replay stars guest host Sebastian Maniscalco and on Thursday, the Jimmy Kimmel Live rerun is guest-hosted by Anthony Anderson from “Black-ish” with his special guest, the funniest Covid-19 survivor there is, D.L. Hughley.

Monday is great night for comedy reruns in late night. It starts with the brilliant Martin Short on Conan. Marty Short has been a great late night guest during the pandemic shutdown. He’s been carrying some of his hosts whenever the remote Facetime style interviews hit an awkward snag. Also on Monday, we get a repeat of W. Kamau Bell on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert and then Will Ferrell on the Late Late Show with James Corden.

Tuesday is going to be fun for comedy fans and aficionados of the space program. First on CBS, Jon Stewart drops in on his former employee Stephen Colbert on a Late Show rerun. Then on the Late Late Show, James Corden will be airing a repeat episode featuring astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley which took place remotely in June from the International Space Station.

You know Doug & Bob (the astronauts, not the McKenzie Brothers from SCTV) from this past weekend when they came back to Earth using SpaceX technology and gave us America’s first thrilling splashdown since 1975. James Corden will re-air a conversation with these two space heroes from the ISS on Tuesday on CBS.

If you’re looking for some fresh, non-rerun late night comedy, Tig Notaro is on a brand new episode of the Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday night. Tig recently observed the 8th anniversary of her well-documented cancer diagnosis and has healed after a long recovery and unfortunately, she has no comedy club stages to celebrate on since they’re all closed.

On Friday night, Bill Maher has a new episode of Real Time on HBO. Bill had hoped to be back in his studio or in an empty venue with no audience when he returned from his summer break last week, but that didn’t happen. Damn you HBO! Bill was still doing the show from his backyard last week and expects to still be out back this Friday as well. Yeah, Bill Maher didn’t follow through on the tree climbing challenge he dared Jimmy Fallon to accept either.

Finally on Saturday, SNL is replaying their episode hosted by Daniel Craig from March 7, 2020. If you’re looking for the historical significance of that episode of Saturday Night Live, it was the last SNL done in Studio 8-H at 30 Rock in front of a live audience. It was the last one before the pandemic shutdown and we’re still not sure what Saturday Night Live will look like when it comes back on the air in the fall. So enjoy some history this Saturday evening.

Have a great week. It’s hot. Stay inside. Maybe soak in a cool bath. At least you don’t have to wear a mask in the tub. Unless it’s a tub for two. Ooh.
