Who is On Late Night Tonight in Comedy: Week of August 10, 2020

Who’s on Late Night Tonight in Comedy?

This week in late night, Jimmy Kimmel Live is going back to having guest hosts as we all await Jimmy’s return in late September. In fact, other than Lilly Singh, all of our late night talk shows are back with new episodes this week, but then Lilly always has been “a little late.”

Back to JKL, Kimmel has made some interesting guest host choices this week. The first couple of weeks of guest hosting, it was all comedians sitting in Jimmy Kimmel’s chair. This week, we have a singer, a comedian who’s the talk of TikTok and an actor who was everyone’s favorite Brat Packer.

On Monday, singer Dua Lipa will be sitting for the host on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Then on Tuesday, it’s the comedian who’s got the Presidential panties in such a wad that Trump has promised to ban TikTok completely in the United States, Sarah Cooper. She seems to have come up with the comedic bit of the pandemic shutdown or at least one that will be remembered fondly when we look back at this time.

Sarah Cooper has used TikTok as her forum for her videos where she lip-syncs to audio of the President. She doesn’t wear any sort of Trump costume, makeup or wig. She just moves her lips to his most insane words. And people have gone nuts for it.

All of Sarah Cooper’s attention has caught Jimmy Kimmel’s eye and she will be filling in for ABC’s late night host on Tuesday. Sarah Cooper’s special guest will Ben Stiller. And we have to wonder if the conversation won’t be more about Sarah’s career than it will be about Ben’s. At the very least, it feels like we’ll at least get a new Sarah Cooper – Donald Trump lip-syncing video out of this occasion.

Finally this week on Jimmy Kimmel Live, the fun and funny Rob Lowe will be filling in for Jimmy on Wednesday and Thursday nights. Rob Lowe’s guests will be the delightful Danny DeVito on Wednesday night and then the band Dawes is listed as Rob’s guest on Thursday evening.

There’s a couple of comedy stars who are making multiple appearances this week in late night. First, Jason Sudeikis will be on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Wednesday and then on the Late Late Show with James Corden on Thursday. It’s that kind of week folks. Even James Corden is back at work.

Jason Sudeikis who just wrapped up hosting the first season of the “Tournament of Laughs” on TBS, will be promoting his new comedy series coming to Apple TV+. Sudeikis is pulling off something pretty unusual in show business. He’s starring in a TV series which is a spin-off of a TV commercial. Awhile back, NBC was promoting the English Premier League soccer games which it was broadcasting and the promos introduced a new Jason Sudeikis character known as Ted Lasso.

In the Premiere League promos, Sudeikis played Ted Lasso, a former American college football coach who had taken a job in England as a football, let’s make that soccer coach. These promos are now the basis for Jason Sudeikis’ new Apple TV+ series appropriately called “Ted Lasso.” The premise is the same. An American football coach taking over a British soccer team. Unfortunately, Ted Lasso doesn’t realize that he’s been set up to fail. The 10 episode season of “Ted Lasso” premieres on Apple TV+ this Friday, August 14th. Jason Sudeikis will be on the Late Show on Wednesday and the Late Late Show on Thursday to tell us all about it.

Another guest with a new comedy series who’s making more than one appearance in late night this week, is the long time Saturday Night Live writer, Paula Pell. We’re huge fans of Paula at the IBang and we can’t wait for her new show coming to Quibi, one of the million streaming services now available.

In the new murder mystery comedy series, “Mapleworth Murders,” Paula Pell plays Abigail Mapleworth, a murder-mystery writer who solves homicides in the tiny town of New Woodstream. Sort of like “Murder She Wrote“, but funny. Paula Pell is co-starring with another veteran of the Saturday Night Live writers’ room, John Lutz. They’re also producing the show along with SNL creator Lorne Michaels and Late Night host Seth Meyers. “Mapleworth Murders” premieres Tuesday, August 10th on Quibi.

To discuss her new adventure in front of the camera, Paula Pell will be a remote guest on the Tonight Show on Wednesday night and then Paula and her co-star and co-producer John Lutz will both be guests on Late Night with Seth Meyers on Thursday night.

Wednesday night, we’ve got a couple of stand ups in late night. Although, it’s pretty doubtful they’ll be performing from their remote locations. Sam Jay will be appearing remotely on Late Night with Seth Meyers. Sam is as outspoken as she is funny. Her brand new stand up comedy special “Sam Jay: 3 In The Morning” just debuted on Netflix last week and it’s currently available for streaming.

Also on Wednesday evening, Australia’s Tim Minchin will be on the Late Late Show with James Corden. Besides a comedian, Tim’s resume also includes being a composer/lyricist, musician, actor, satirist, writer, producer and director. Tim will be promoting his latest TV series “Upright” which is about two people, Lucky (Tim Minchin) and Meg (Milly Alcock), who meet up in the Australian desert and find themselves on a near impossible mission to get an upright piano from one side of the continent to the other.

Upright” will be available on Sundance Now in the States. That’s the Sundance Channel’s own streaming service which is available through Amazon Prime. Watch the very quirky and very funny Tim Minchin on the Late Late Show with James Corden Wednesday night on CBS.

On Thursday night, NBC is doing that the ol’ cross-promotion gimmick. One of Jimmy Fallon’s remote guests on the Tonight Show on Thursday night will be Seth Meyers. So just remember, if Seth is on right side of your screen (that’s your right), that means he’s a guest. If he’s on the left side, (again, your left), that means he’s the host. Hopefully, by the time we’re all used to how late night works in the social distancing era, it will be over.

Looking at the weekend, on Friday night there’s a brand new episode of Real Time with Bill Maher on HBO. We may get hear who Joe Biden has decided to be his running mate when this new Real Time show airs, so we can get Maher’s take on Joe’s choice.

And on Saturday, we’re still in reruns when it comes to Saturday Night Live. It will be a repeat from November last year starring Harry Styles as both host and musical guest. It’s one of the funner episodes from last season on SNL and definitely worth catching again.

Programming note: Be ready for any of our late night shows to change their schedules if they can land a remote interview with Joe Biden’s new running mate. Or maybe they already have and Biden is going with Danny DeVito. Hmm.
