Who is Hosting Saturday Night Live Tonight: September 12, 2020

Tonight’s Saturday Night Live is a repeat from up the block, hosted by Jennifer Lopez!

This evening’s Saturday Night Live rerun originally aired live on December 7, 2019 B.C. That stands for “Before Covid” when SNL was performed in a real television studio with a packed house of happy fans lucky enough to score one of NYC’s hottest tickets. The audience even gets to do a quick bit of acting during the monologue when they react to cast member Beck Bennett’s head exploding. More on that later.

Speaking of performing at 30 Rock’s famous Studio 8-H, NBC announced through a press release that for its upcoming season, Saturday Night Live will be back home at NBC’s Rockefeller Center in their home studio when the new season begins on Saturday, October 3rd. No other details about SNL – Season 46 were given. The press release simply stated “More information on the new season will be announced at a later date.”

So SNL fans will have to wait to find out who’s hosting the season premiere on October 3rd and how much of an audience will be involved this new season on a show that depends so much on its live studio audience for its laugh track. SNL could follow the Tonight Show example where there’s no studio audience at all or take the route that sports stadiums are taking with pod seating. SNL‘s famed balcony seats would certainly be far enough away to keep a safe social distance from the cast.

As far as the cast is concerned, we still haven’t heard any news of any defections with cast members leaving the show and running off to Hollywood. Page Six reported this past week that Pete Davidson is “likely to return” to SNL for another season despite his movie success during the summer hiatus. Along with the speculation from Pete Davidson himself who, this past February, said it might be time to move on from the NBC variety series because according to Pete, “they think I’m f ucking dumb.”

One Saturday Night Live player we know for sure is returning for the new season is Ego Nwodim. According to a Deadline exclusive, she will be getting promoted this coming season to the main cast as a repertory player. Ego just completed her second SNL season as a featured player.

Normally, cast members spend three seasons at “featured” status before being lifted to full repertory player. Ego did completed that task in just two. This means when the new SNL season begins, announcer Darrell Hammond will be introducing Ego Nwodim in between saying main cast members Kyle Mooney and Chris Redd’s names.

Back to this evening’s SNL encore episode, it was Jennifer Lopez’s third time hosting the award winning variety series. She’s gotten to host SNL every 9 years. Jenny from the Block first hosted back in 2001 during SNL – Season 26, then 9 years later in 2010 in SNL – Season 35 and once again 9 years later, in 2019, J-Lo was back for SNL – Season 45.

If you’re the type of Saturday Night Live fan who screams and cheers when you see a cameo appearance you weren’t expecting on the show, then get ready to go crazy for tonight’s SNL Cold Open. The premise for this evening’s opening sketch is last year’s NATO Conference. To borrow from the “Golden Girls;” Picture it, London, 2019.

For those that don’t remember that infamous scene that happened at London’s meeting of the NATO heads of state, when a few of the most prominent leaders from nations around the globe were overheard and caught on video making fun of our own Supreme Leader, Donald Trump. The SNL Cold Open takes place in the NATO cafeteria where the world leaders are still being mean to ol’ Trumpy pants.

Instead of pulling from their own cast to impersonate the world leaders making fun of Trump, SNL put together a dream team of cameos including the Tonight Show‘s Jimmy Fallon as Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, SNL fave Paul Rudd as French President Emmanuel Macron and finally, permanently disheveled British Prime Minister Boris Johnson delightfully played by “Late Late Show” host James Corden who was making his first SNL appearance. You’ll see a lot of Chris Farley in Corden’s performance. Just enough to make you miss SNL‘s comedy cyclone all the more.

Alec Baldwin also appears as the bullied Donald Trump as the other leaders become the cool kids who won’t sit with Trump in the lunchroom. SNL cast member Kate McKinnon more than holds her own doing her impression of Angela Merkel, the Chancellor of Germany. Tonight’s SNL Cold Open will have you applauding, laughing and almost feeling bad for Donald Trump. Almost.

Jennifer Lopez had so much going on in her life at the time when she hosted SNL her third time, it was hard to fit it all in during her monologue segment. She was months away from doing the Halftime Show for Super Bowl LVIII. That’s 58 for anyone who aren’t ancient Romans.

J-Lo was also celebrating the biggest box office opening of her career with the movie “Hustlers.” Despite her excitement, it did not turn into an Oscar nomination. There was even more J-Lo news; she’s engaged! And not just engaged to any old Joe, but her fiancé is a (former) New York Yankee named Alex Rodriguez. On top of all that, she turned 50. That’s the reason why Beck’s head exploded during the monologue.

As an SNL monologue bonus, with it being December, Jennifer Lopez also performs a holiday classic with another New York City big time surprise appearance by the World Famous Radio City Music Hall Rockettes! And if that wasn’t enough, there’s one more special cameo appearance during the monologue in tonight’s repeat. It’s J-Lo’s iconic, green Versace silk chiffon dress.

If you don’t remember which dress we’re talking about, then congratulations. Because you’re in for a very exciting surprise. Those of you who were watching the 42nd Grammy Awards ceremony way back in February, 2000, will definitely remember this dress and it will be great to see it again. And special congratulations to J-Lo because it still fits spectacularly.

The sketches in this evening’s Saturday Night Live repeat include a sketch we’ve already seen before, a sketch where we’re introduced to a couple of new characters that will return in the future and there’s a bizarre sketch that really introduced us to one of SNL‘s new featured players.

Barry’s Bootcamp” is sketch tonight that will make you say, “I’ve seen this before” and you’d be right for talking to yourself that way. The premise is the return of a sketch called “Soul Cycle“. It’s big ensemble piece that includes most of the SNL cast. It’s about a modern gym who are auditioning new trainers to teach a boot camp style workout class.

Featured player Chloe Fineman is highlighted in the most bizarre sketch of the night. In “Wisconsin Women“, cast members Cecily Strong, Kate McKinnon along with host J-Lo play some hearty women who run a rustic hardware store out in the middle-of-nowhere Wisconsin. Chloe Fineman’s character helps out in the store and has incredibly long hair which due to unforeseen circumstances ends up getting ripped out by a bear. We told you. “Bizarre.”

We get two new characters from the SNL comedy team of Kate McKinnon and Aidy Bryant. These characters are starlets from the Black & White era of film who feud with each other and are basically based on Joan Crawford and Bette Davis. The sketch is a clip of an old movie starring the aging film icons called “The Corporal.”

In the sketch, the ladies are competing for the affections of a corporal returning from war who’s looking for a bride. McKinnon and Bryant’s characters try to hide their gorgeous younger sister who doesn’t realize her own beauty, played by Jennifer Lopez and when that doesn’t work, they try to knock her off.

Jennifer Lopez playing “a woman who doesn’t know how attractive she really is” tends to be a theme in tonight’s SNL rerun. It’s the same gimmick in a sketch called “Surprise Home Makeover” where the host of the makeover show played by cast member Kenan Thompson can’t get over how a nerdy husband (cast member Mikey Day) got such a hot wife (J-Lo).

Since this episode of SNL took place in December, we do get a holiday sketch. In “Hip-Hop Carolers,” host Jennifer Lopez is part of a group of Christmas carolers who have some updated rap versions of classic carols which keep their neighbors both confused and occupied while they rob their house.

Three SNL Shorts are included with tonight’s Saturday Night Live replay. Cast member Pete Davidson brings back his “Chad” character who’s now working as a roadie for the actual Jennifer Lopez. Watch for another very special cameo in this short. “Uh Oh-kay.”

Another SNL Short tonight is perfect for this week with the Republicans wrapping up their national convention. It’s the return of “Them Trumps“, the short that re-imagines America’s First Family as African-American. In this episode, a “Them Trumps” rally goes horribly wrong when President Darius Trump (Kenan Thompson) reveals to a crowd of conservatives that he’s black. It’s extra timely this week.

Finally, there’s a parody spot short for the “Potty PM” which is a toilet system that let’s you take a piss during the night without leaving the comfort of your own bed. It’s a very exciting new product. That is, unless you’re a woman.

Weekend Update discusses Donald Trump’s impeachment as its lead story. However, when this edition of Weekend Update first aired, anchormen Colin Jost and Michael Che are still wondering if Trump’s impeachment is going to happen. Colin Jost tells us how the Catholics would have handled Trump’s transgressions and Che has a take on how Trump is trying to distract all of us from the possibility of impeachment.

Other things covered tonight on Weekend Update are Trump’s new regulation ideas for toilets, the Ukraine scandal, Rudy Giuliani’s documentary, new food stamp guidelines, Post Malone, the Peloton Bicycle ad that everyone was calling sexist, the XFL uniforms, Papa John’s divorce, a woman who attacked a train worker with breast milk, and a dog causing a house fire by using the microwave.

Colin Jost and Michael Che welcome two recurring guest characters to the Weekend Update desk this evening. First up, Kate McKinnon is back as Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi who wants to offer a clap-back and some Catholic prayers for Donald Trump as we inch closer to impeachment.

Then, cast member Beck Bennett brings his character, “Jules, Who Sees Things a Little Differently” back to Weekend Update. Jules has some tips for the holiday season. Spoiler Alert! If you were hoping to get some actual seasonal helpful hints, you’re going to be disappointed.
