Saturday Night Live continues its new season tonight with a live SNL hosted by Awkwafina!
Few entertainers have had the kind of year Awkwafina has, but then few entertainers are as multifaceted as Awkwafina. She’s a rapper, television personality, writer and now scene-stealing comedic movie actor, thanks to her roles in this summer’s comedy heist film “Ocean’s 8” co-starring Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway and Mindy Kaling and also the sleeper hit rom-com “Crazy Rich Asians,” the first major Hollywood studio release featuring a primarily Asian cast in 15 years.
Awkwafina doesn’t stop making history there. Tonight, when she hosts Saturday Night Live 11:30pm on NBC and live across all American time zones, Awkwafina will be the first woman of Asian descent to host SNL in 18 years with the last person being Lucy Liu in 2000. Our host tonight brings the total number of Asian and Asian-Americans who have hosted Saturday Night Live to a whopping 5. Awkwafina joins the previously mentioned Liu, Jackie Chan, Aziz Ansari and Kumail Nanjiani on this very skimpy list which after 44 seasons can still be counted using only one hand. It seems like this bit of SNL trivia regarding Asians who have hosted the show will be a definite topic of conversation tonight during Awkwafina’s SNL monologue.
One thing to look forward to tonight on SNL will be to see if the writers go back to the Matt Damon well already in Week 2 of a brand new season to play Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. The cameo appearance by Damon doing an impression of the most talked about political figure in the country right now (and that’s not easy to pull off while Donald Trump is still in the country) received plenty of social media attention, both good and bad, when it caught viewers off guard in the SNL – Season 44 premiere last weekend. If you recall, back in 2017 when Melissa McCarthy surprised everyone with her spot-on impersonation of then-White House Press Secretary Sean “Spicy” Spicer, SNL went back to it almost immediately. Last week’s SNL Cold Open seem to include almost everyone in Washington DC, however Matt Damon’s Judge Kavanaugh has yet to meet Alec Baldwin’s President Trump. Will the two cross paths tonight? Will have to wait and see.
Other things we can look for either in sketches or on Colin Jost and Michael Che’s Weekend Update segment include the Presidential Alert text that most of the country received, President Trump and North Korea’s Dear Leader Kim Jong Un losing out on this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, Lindsay Lohan trying to swipe a woman’s kids after thinking they were victims of human trafficking, Toys R Us making a possible comeback, Kanye West’s most recent insanity and our very dignified President boarding Air Force One with what looked like toilet paper dragging behind him.
In the promos for tonight’s all new Saturday Night Live which you can watch below, Awkwafina shows how she will be bringing the party to SNL while cast member Beck Bennett tries to keep up. Then in the next set, Awkwafina and musical guest Travis Scott are joined by a freestyling Cecily Strong who learns which month it isn’t.
Tonight, Awkwafina hosts a brand new and live Saturday Night Live with musical guest Travis Scott at 11:30pm et and live all across America on NBC.
