Tonight, Saturday Night Live is brand new and hosted by the star of Emmy Award winning comedy series “Fleabag”, Phoebe Waller-Bridge!
SNL – Season 45 is underway, but unfortunately, it’s not off to a great start in the ratings department. And creatively, the Saturday Night Live season opener wasn’t much better which sent SNL’s premiere ratings plummeting 30 percent in the key 18-49 demo. Executive Producer Lorne Michaels hopes to remedy that in Week 2 of the new season by bringing in a first-time host with critical acclaim and a musical guest with pure pop appeal. Outside 30 Rock, long lines were already forming in the middle of the week for coveted Saturday Night Live stand-by tickets to see newbie host Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the star and creator of the BBC series “Fleabag” along with musical guest mega-star Taylor Swift.
While the Grammy Award winning Taylor Swift might be bringing young screaming fans to her musical return to Saturday Night Live, Phoebe Waller-Bridge is bringing some serious award hardware of her own. “Fleabag“, the BBC series she created and stars in, which is available on Amazon Video and IFC On Demand here in the States, dominated the comedy categories and won 6 Primetime Emmy Awards a few weeks ago including Outstanding Comedy Series, as well as Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for Phoebe Waller-Bridge. “Fleabag” was nominated for 11 Primetime Emmy Awards in all.
If you’re not familiar with Phoebe Waller-Bridge, you may know some of her other work. She created the BBC series, “Killing Eve” which is always winning Sandra Oh all kinds of awards. She was also the voice of the feisty female droid L3-37, Lando Calrissian’s love interest, in “Solo: A Star Wars Story.” Plus, she’s written the next James Bond movie installment, “No Time to Die,” starring Daniel Craig which is due in theaters everywhere April, 2020.
In her award winning comedy TV series, Phoebe Waller-Bridge plays the title character of Fleabag. That’s the only name we know her character by, but Waller-Bridge fills in some of the other gaps when Fleabag breaks the 4th wall to talk directly to her audience. It seems Fleabag is always learning some new life lesson on the show, some times in a hard and vulgar way, but the results are always hilarious as she deals with her sister, her soon-to-be stepmom and the memory of her best friend, Boo. We may get to see some sort of parody of “Fleabag” on tonight’s new Saturday Night Live, either in a sketch or an SNL – Digital Short.
The ongoing impeachment inquiry is sure to be a continued topic on Saturday Night Live tonight in the cold open, the sketches, shorts and of course, Weekend Update. The White House has been subpoenaed, there rumors of a possible second whistleblower, the President is tweeting like a madman and Alec Baldwin has obviously agreed to keep playing Donald Trump, so why wouldn’t SNL keep going with the same tried and true material this evening?
As for other possible sketch subject matter tonight, there’s also Presidential contender and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders shaking off a heart attack like a champ at a Vegas campaign event this week. Larry David made a cameo appearance as the “Feel the Bern” candidate on the SNL season premiere last week. It probably wouldn’t be too hard to get him back for a Bernie sketch again tonight.
Other things that could be source material for SNL this evening include the national conversation about a possible second American Civil War, the Joaquin Phoenix “Joker” movie being the talk of the cinematic world along with the pre-release panic it caused, Martin Scorsese saying that Marvel comic book movies are “not cinema”, the MLB Playoffs, college athletes in California being able to start getting paid now, and the First Daughter & Presidential Adviser Ivanka Trump dressing her child up like a Star Wars stormtrooper and it causing a Twitter war in the process.
We have the promos for tonight’s all new Saturday Night Live for you to watch below. In the first promo released by NBC, we see recent Emmy Award winner Phoebe Waller-Bridge preparing to host SNL and we also see how much she loves those new Emmy trophies. In the next one, Phoebe is joined by musical guest Taylor Swift for a promo that’s just a wee bit too British.
Speaking of T-Swizzle, Taylor Swift is not a musical guest who ever just does a couple of numbers on Saturday Night Live. She likes to get in on the sketch action as well. So, with Lorne Michaels looking for young ratings this week, watch for him to put Tay-Tay in a couple of sketches to the delight of her fans, the Swift-Boaters. Wait. That name can’t be right.
SNL is live tonight with your host, the star of “Fleabag“, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and musical guest Taylor Swift, live across all American time zones at 11:30pm et on NBC!
