Who is Hosting Saturday Night Live Tonight: October 24, 2020

As we’re rolling in the deep of the new Saturday Night Live season, SNL is live tonight and hosted by Grammy, Golden Globe and Academy Award winner, Adele!

When you’ve won 15 Grammys including Best New Artist (2008), a Golden Globe Award and an Oscar, what else is there to do if you’re a British music superstar!? It’s host Saturday Night Live for the first time.

Things will be a little easier on SNL announcer Darrell Hammond this evening. First of all, the host of the show, Adele, doesn’t have a last name to announce. And then tonight’s musical guest doesn’t use a name at all. Just a pronoun. H.E.R., who is also making “her” Saturday Night Live debut.

Adele, who won her Golden Globe and Oscar for the 2012 James Bond flick “Skyfall” starring Daniel Craig, practically screamed on her Instagram when the news was announced that she would be hosting Saturday Night Live for the very first time. Adele has appeared as musical guest twice before coming back this evening to host the whole shebang.

The British star known for her hit songs like “Hello” and “Someone Like You“, posted her extreme enthusiasm about being a first time SNL host on IG. She wrote, “Bloooooody hellllll I’m so excited about this!! And also absolutely terrified! My first ever hosting gig and for SNL of all things!!!! I’ve always wanted to do it as a stand alone moment, so that I could roll up my sleeves and fully throw myself into it, but the time has never been right. But if there was ever a time for any of us to jump head first into the deep end with our eyes closed and hope for the best it’s 2020 right?”

Apparently Adele doesn’t realize how easily things have gone wrong in 2020. She also wrote about the timing of tonight’s hosting debut. She said, “Itll be almost 12 years to the day that I first appeared on the show, during an election…which went on to break my career in America, so it feels full circle and I just couldn’t possibly say no!”

The “election” that Adele is referring to is the 2008 Presidential election between Senator Barack Obama (Dem – Illinois) and Senator John McCain (GOP – Arizona). That particular episode of SNL aired on October 18th, 2008. The host was Josh Brolin and the musical guest, of course, was Adele. And it would stand as the highest rated episode of Saturday Night Live for over a decade.

And not because of Josh Brolin’s comedic timing or Adele’s angelic voice, but because of a cameo appearance on the show that night. The guest that had 14 million people watching SNL that night was John McCain’s running-mate, the “Hockey Mom”, the “Alaska Evita”, the “Caribou Barbie” herself, Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska.

Love her or hate her, Sarah Palin was a ratings juggernaut. And that just added to the huge amount of Americans discovering Adele that night. Saturday Night Live helped launch Adele’s career in the States and tonight, 12 years later, she’s back to host to return the favor. We’ll have to see if SNL tries to get lightning to strike in the same place twice tonight. Could Sarah Palin be waiting in the wings this evening to recreate that moment!? Or at the very least, Tina Fey!? Or maybe Joe Biden’s running-mate, the real Kamala Harris!? Who knows!? After all, it is 2020 when anything can happen.

Usually a Saturday Night Live host has something to promote when emceeing the show. Not in the case of Adele tonight. Fans of Adele have been waiting since the end of 2019 for a new album from the musical superstar. There was word that something would be coming out in the Summer of 2020 and that never happened after the Covid19 emergency hit the planet shutting down everything in the entertainment world. Then her record company impatiently said, there will be a new Adele album when it’s ready and no time sooner. Followers of Adele are hoping that Saturday Night Live will be the time and the place when she announces when new music is arriving.

So with no new music to discuss, what will Adele talk about during her monologue tonight? Well, besides her singing career, Adele is also a favorite of the gossip rags and sites that seem obsessed with her weight. During this past summer, Adele rightfully flaunted her considerable weight loss on social media. Like a lot of people, she used the time in lockdown to focus on her health. Since that’s what a lot fans and trolls alike tend to focus on, Adele slimming down will most likely be a topic of conversation during tonight’s SNL monologue segment.

Naturally, the SNL – Cold Open will be dedicated to this past Thursday’s final Presidential Debate between President Donald Trump and former Veep Joe Biden. That seems to be a given. We’ll just have to see who SNL picks from their cast members to play NBC News debate moderator Kristen Welker who has been getting nothing but high praise from both sides of the aisle and nothing but jealousy from the moderator of the first disastrous debate, Fox News’ own Chris Wallace. This may be a time for new SNL feature player Punkie Johnson to shine as the new darling of the media, Kristen Welker.

Speaking of the Presidential Election, Saturday Night Live is currently in the middle of what was originally announced as 5 new live shows in a row to kick off SNL – Season 46. That has been changed. This past Thursday, NBC announced in a press release that Saturday Night Live will be doing “6” new shows in a row to start the new season instead of 5. That will be new SNL record. 5 new shows in a row would have been a record as well, but it you’re going to break a record why not smash it? No host or musical guest has been announced yet for the SNL episode airing the Saturday after the Tuesday, November 3rd election.

By the time Saturday Night Live gets to its 6th new show in a row, it will be several days following the election. So hopefully, we’ll know by then if Jim Carrey is going to stick around to continue playing Joe Biden if he’s elected. Hopefully, Alec Baldwin will be able to wipe off his orange makeup and toss his cotton candy blonde wig in a nearby trash can and retire his Donald Trump impression after singing Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” at the piano during the cold open for the Saturday, November 7th show.*

*That’s a reference to how SNL handled Hillary Clinton’s loss in 2016.

Speaking of impressions, it’s a good bet that cast member Kate McKinnon will be bringing her creepy, vampire-like Rudy Giuliani impression back to SNL tonight to skewer America’s former mayor and now full-time patsy, about getting caught in a compromising position with a young actress and having it all filmed by “Borat” star Sacha Baron Cohen for his highly anticipated “Borat” sequel.

Regular viewers of cable news will be wondering if we’ll see an SNL sketch this evening surrounding the story about CNN political contributor and reporter for the New Yorker magazine, Jeffrey Toobin allegedly pleasuring his own Toobin Snake during a Zoom meeting with colleagues. When SNL was remotely producing the show from home during the earlier days of the pandemic lockdown, the show would regularly make sketches out of Zoom calls. Where was Jeffrey Toobin when SNL really needed him for material!?

Other news regarding D. Trump and the election that Weekend Update might report on tonight include the President’s secret bank account in “Gggina” or China like the rest of us say it, the QAnon claim that JFK Jr. was going to replace Mike Pence on Trump’s GOP ticket, the President’s combative “60 Minutes” interview with Leslie Stahl airing this weekend, 50 Cent endorsing Trump while also claiming the President doesn’t care about black people and of course, best of all, evangelist Pat Robertson predicting a win for Trump and a loss for the planet by claiming an asteroid will then destroy the Earth.

There’s other topics not involving our headline-grabbing President that Colin Jost and Michael Che might cover as well, like Pope Francis endorsing same-sex civil unions, the Battle of the Famous Hot Actors Named Chris on Twitter this past week (poor Chris Pratt), surfboard sales riding a wave during the pandemic, Bruce Willis bringing his “Die Hard” character John McClane back to sell car batteries, the end of Tab diet soda, Bill Cosby’s new frightening mug shot, the World Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Tampa Bay Rays happening in Dallas, and Carole Baskin from the “Tiger King” docu-series announcing that she’s bisexual. Congrats Carole. Way to turn off both sexes.

Saturday Night Live released a couple of promos for tonight’s show which we have for you to watch below. The first promo was released on Twitter and it’s a quick montage of Adele’s two previous appearances on SNL as a musical guest. Sure, there’s not a lot of laughs in it, but it does get you excited to see Adele back on American television.

Speaking of which, in the second released SNL promo, we get Adele plus tonight’s SNL musical guest H.E.R. and cast member Kate McKinnon and we get a battle of the accents between Adele and Kate. You decide who does it best!? Kate as a Brit or Adele as a Yank!? There’s also some confusion about who exactly is the musical guest this week on Saturday Night Live. Is it her or is it her or could it be H.E.R.!?

The fabulous Adele is back on Saturday Night Live, but this time she’s making her hosting debut with musical guest H.E.R.! It happens tonight at 11:30pm et and coast-to-coast across all American time zones on NBC!
