Who is Hosting Saturday Night Live Tonight: June 29, 2019

Saturday Night Live’s Summer of Reruns continues with a repeat SNL tonight hosted by Don Cheadle!

SNL is on hiatus and the cast is quite busy with its side projects. Kate McKinnon new comedy movie, “Yesterday” was released nationwide this weekend. Pete Davidson is getting ready to start shooting a new Judd Apatow film, loosely based on Davidson’s life, growing up on Staten Island. And Kenan Thompson is preparing for the premiere of his new comedy competition reality show, “Bring The Funny” which debuts on Tuesday, July 9th at 10pm on NBC.

So while all that is happening, Saturday Night Live has plenty of repeats from this past season to air. Tonight’s SNL “Best Of” is hosted by Don “War Machine” Cheadle and it originally aired on Saturday, February 16, 2019. Cheadle was promoting the then-upcoming release of “Avengers: Endgame“, the final cinematic chapter for the Marvel Comics super group. “Avengers: Endgame” would be Don Cheadle’s 7th Marvel movie to add to his IMDb page, however this episode of SNL which airs tonight at 11:30pm et on NBC, would be his very first time hosting the show.

This evening’s repeat Saturday Night Live opens with the return of Alec Baldwin as the 45th President of the United States Donald J. Trump. It would be the first time in a month since Baldwin had gotten an orange paint job to play Trump on SNL. The variety series was so thrilled to have Baldwin back in the cotton candy wig this week, it made a special promo for the episode to announce Baldwin’s return which you can watch below.

The SNL – Cold Open in this evening’s repeat parodies an actual moment from the Trump presidency. It featured Alec Baldwin as Trump doing a press conference on the White House lawn. SNL‘s fake Trump was announcing a fake national emergency to the country and the media in an attempt to extort money for his border wall from Congress. In the opener, Baldwin’s Trump has no problem letting reporters know there’s no real emergency (much like the real Trump did), he just sees it as a way to “build wall.”

For the monologue, Don Cheadle takes the stage in tonight’s repeat with all the amped up energy that most first time hosts have in their inaugural hosting gig. And like a lot of other first-timers, the SNL writers sent out a cast member to help Don get through the introduction. In Cheadle’s case, it’s cast member Leslie Jones. Cheadle announced that he had won the “Avengers Host SNL Raffle” and that’s why he got to host to plug the movie. He also explained that he’s one of those actors that most people know even if they don’t know him by name. Plus, Cheadle explains how the fans always want a pic, which is the reason why Leslie interrupts the monologue.

Once the show is underway, tonight’s repeat opening sketch is “Fresh Takes.” It features SNL cast members Mikey Day, Kate McKinnon, Alex Moffat, Kyle Mooney, Chris Redd and Aidy Bryant as high school freshman doing a school announcements news show for Lincoln High. Don Cheadle joins the high school geek panel as the creepy Earth Science teacher, Mr. Paul who has plenty of school gossip to share. Actually, it’s too much. The unique thing about this sketch tonight is how amazing this SNL cast is at playing kid characters, especially awkward teenagers.

The next sketch is called “Extreme Baking Championships” which features host Don Cheadle as one of the contestants on a baking reality show. This is a high-tech sketch where the bakers cook up hideous creations that look like they’re from a bakery that specializes in nightmares. This is a sketch where the crew should have been thanked at the end of the night just for being able to pull it off.

Also, tonight is the return of an SNL fan favorite sketch. Cast member Kenan Thompson is once again Steve Harvey hosting the recurring “Celebrity Family Feud” sketch. This episode of Saturday Night Live aired just a week before the 2019 Academy Awards, so the theme for this edition of “Celebrity Family Feud” was Oscar Nominees with veteran actors facing off against the newbies, meaning the first time nominees. Just about the entire cast gets involved in this sketch with their best celebrity impressions including Melissa Villaseñor bringing out her pitch-perfect Lady Gaga impersonation. Other cast impressions in this sketch include host Don Cheadle as Spike Lee, Kate McKinnon as Glenn Close, and Cecily Strong doing a remarkable Olivia Coleman.

The “Bar Fight” sketch that you’ll see again tonight is probably the funniest that this SNL rerun has to offer. It features Beck Bennett and Don Cheadle playing a couple of drunk hicks ready to thrown down in a tavern. Unfortunately, they’re having trouble getting the brawl started because the song “Lollipop” by Mika is playing on the jukebox and it’s just too joyful for fight music. The bar fight quickly turns into a dance-off. The dance moves are enough to make this sketch worth a second watch.

The last sketch of the night is live parody spot with Kate McKinnon and Aidy Bryant as Cosmo & Olympia Sparadukis, an elderly Greek couple from Queens, NY who have a ballroom venue, “The Regal Promenade Pavilion“, available for rent to happy couples for all their wedding needs. The Pavilion is filled with every cheesy wedding reception cliche imaginable.

There are two SNL – Digital Shorts to enjoy for a second go-around on tonight’s repeat. The first is a parody spot for “Pound Puppy” which is a tent that looks like a very large dog. The dog-shaped tent allows couples to have sex in privacy away from the staring eyes of their pets. The next SNL Digital Short is “Roach-Ex” which starts out like every other television commercial for roach spray, but then it quickly takes a very dark turn.

Weekend Update and the news team of Colin Jost and Michael Che were all over the idiocy of President Trump’s White House press conference which inspired the SNL – Cold Open in tonight’s episode, along with Trump’s lame attempt to scare the nation into thinking there was an actual national immigration emergency in order to get his wall money. Jost mocks out the President’s rambling speech with no facts to back up his emergency while Che claims he’s so tired of making Donald Trump jokes week after week about his “dumb-ass wall” that now he’s worn down and actually wants to see what this wall would look like. Also, watch for cast member Pete Davidson in a very short cameo role as a border wall construction worker.

Other things getting Weekend Update coverage on tonight’s SNL repeat include Childish Gambino’s “This is America” winning Song of the Year at the Grammys, a new proposed emergency vehicle siren law in NYC, singer Ryan Adams being investigated for allegedly sexting a minor, the 2020 Presidential Election Democratic contenders, Amazon cancelling its plans to build a new headquarters in Queens, NY,  “Last Call with Carson Daly” coming to an end, an argument over Cheez-Its that led to attempted murder, and Katy Perry’s fashion line pulling its racist looking shoes off the market.

Besides Pete Davidson in a construction helmet, there are plenty of visitors in tonight’s repeat Weekend Update including Alex Moffat and Kate McKinnon as Senator Charles Schumer (D – NY) and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi who are there to discuss the border wall funding negotiations they had with President Trump.  The Democrat Duo claim they don’t want to gloat over outsmarting the President on the Congressional budget for the border wall which left Trump with only a small fraction of the cash he needed to build his dream project. The two political characters can’t seem to quit laughing at the President while doing the patented Pelosi clap-back.

Also in time for the Academy Awards, Beck Bennett joins Weekend Update this week as “Jules, Who Just Sees Things A Little Differently” and who wanted to have an annoying conversation with Colin Jost about the Oscars going without a host this year. And Mikey Day stops by the Update desk as Mort Fellner who is a “Supercentenarian”, meaning someone who is 110 or older. Mort has some announcements for the supercentenarian community.

There’s two promos for tonight’s Saturday Night Live rerun. The first promotes the return of Alec Baldwin as President Donald Trump. We see Baldwin going through his make-up process in order to transform into the Orange Terror of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. In the next set of promos, host Don Cheadle is joined by his musical guest Gary Clark Jr. and Pete Davidson who tries his best to join the ranks of the Avengers. Pete’s also very concerned about both Groundhog Day and Valentine’s Day. He’s really into holidays in these promos.
