Who is Hosting Saturday Night Live Tonight: July 3, 2021

Tonight, F is for Family and S is for Saturday Night Live Rerun hosted by Bill Burr!
This evening, SNL has picked one of our favorite episodes from the past season to replay over the 4th of July holiday weekend. It must be one of Saturday Night Live‘s favorites too because this is the second time they’ve aired this show as a repeat. It’s from October 10, 2020 and it stars the amazingly funny and talented first-time host, Bill Burr.
Bill Burr is the type of host who had plenty to promote when he emceed Saturday Night Live for the first time in his career. In the headline, we mentioned his Netflix hit animated series, “F is for Family.” Bill is also one of the first comedians to have his own podcast with the “Monday Morning Podcast” available on multiple platforms including iTunes, SoundCloud and Spotify.
In tonight’s monologue, you’ll hear Bill Burr promote his latest movie at the time, “The King of Staten Island” written, produced and directed by Judd Apatow. Bill was getting incredible rave reviews for his performance in the movie that stars SNL cast member Pete Davidson.
The monologue tonight is pure stand up by a pure stand up comedian. As the host of a show from last October, Bill Burr takes on the topics of the day in his monologue segment. He handles Covid restrictions and has the perfect take about whether to wear a mask in public or not to wear one. Bill also discusses “Cancel Culture”, white women who want to feel woke, and Pride Month. It’s perfect timing for this SNL repeat with Pride Month 2021 coming to end this year.
To appreciate tonight’s SNL Cold Open, you’ll have to remember where we were as a country last October. The 2020 Presidential Election was in full swing. And the week that this SNL episode originally aired, was the same week of the Vice-Presidential Debate between VP Mike Pence (cast member Beck Bennett) and Joe Biden’s running mate then-Senator Kamala Harris (guest star Maya Rudolph) from California.
Saturday Night Live wrote a great back-and-forth between the two candidates. However, this opening sketch runs a little long and gets a little too silly trying to parody the real life headline that a fly landed on Pence’s head during the debate and then sat there, along with melding it with the 1986 horror film “The Fly” starring Jeff Goldblum. Fortunately, SNL had the services of a guest comedian who could imitate both future President Joe Biden and Jeff Goldblum with Jim Carrey playing duel roles in the SNL Cold Open. Unfortunately, SNL didn’t know when to quit with a sketch that gets weird even by Saturday Night Live standards.
In the sketches you’ll see tonight, Bill Burr stretches himself with some characters and he plays some directly from his personal wheel-house on tonight’s SNL rerun. This evening, Bill plays a guy who is starting to socializing with his neighbors again after the pandemic, only to find that was a mistake. He also plays a sportscaster who should stick to football and avoid race issues, and in another sketch, Bill is a mafia boss who’s released from prison only to find out his old gang is now a bunch of woke mobsters.
Bill Burr finds himself playing a character very close to home in an SNL Short for “Sam Adams Jack-O Pumpkin Ale.” It’s a parody commercial where real Bostonians tell Sam Adams reps how they like the new Fall ale. This short is so spot-on, it can make people from Boston homesick. In the other SNL Short on tonight’s replay, cast member Beck Bennett plays a reality star name Benjy who puts out an anti-Trump rant on social media and name checks some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. Yeah. Big mistake.
The lead story on this evening’s repeat edition of Weekend Update takes us back to the final months of the Trump Administration. Mainly, it’s ol’ one-termer’s release from Walter Reed hospital after contracting the Covid virus. Anchorman Michael Che sums it up by saying, “I’m not got to say I’m disappointed (by Trump’s survival), but it kinda feels like when there’s a car crash and the only survivor is the drunk driver.”
Other stories you’ll see covered by Weekend Update‘s Colin Jost and Michael Che include Trump’s super-spreader campaign rallies and the President’s Covid treatment which leads to an appearance by cast member Kate McKinnon’s new Weekend Update character, Dr. Wayne Wenowdis, a medical expert commenting on Trump’s condition. He tells us nothing we don’t already know. “We know this.”
Also arriving at the news desk tonight is cast member Pete Davidson who is there to comment on “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling’s transphobic tweets and comments. Pete regrets getting his “Harry Potter” tattoo now and addresses Rowling by calling himself ugly. It’s typical Davidson.
Other topics covered by Weekend Update on tonight’s SNL rerun include Orthodox Jews protesting Covid19 restrictions in New York City, sexy hand sanitizer Halloween costumes, McDonald’s new breakfast items, Yankees legend Whitey Ford passing away, Sizzler restaurants filing for bankruptcy, scientists discovering a 50 year old great white shark, and a Pennsylvania man arrested for trying to rent a horse for sex.
This evening’s repeat episode of SNL also has some sad moments where the variety show pays multiple tributes to iconic guitarist Eddie Van Halen who passed away earlier that week last October. Musical guest Jack White uses a guitar designed exclusively for him by Eddie Van Halen in one of his performances this evening. Also, you’ll see host Bill Burr wearing a “Van Halen” t-shirt during tonight’s curtain call. Plus, SNL shows a clip towards the end of the show of Eddie sitting in with the Saturday Night Live Band led by G.E. Smith in 1987 when his then-wife Valerie Bertinelli hosted the show in SNL – Season 12.
We’ve got the promos for tonight’s repeat episode of Saturday Night Live just below for you to watch. Host Bill Burr is joined by senior cast member Kenan Thompson for this evening’s “awkward promo”. Mission accomplished there. Also, Bill is hoping to perform as the musical guest on the show as well. It’s a pretty definite “No”.
Bill Burr stars in a replay of his hosting debut on Saturday Night Live with musical guest Jack White, tonight at 11:30pm et on NBC.
