This very cool new series followed Mike Lawrence fine tune a joke at three clubs in one night.

2016 has been Mike Lawrence’s year. He helped the New York City RoastMasters show skyrocket in popularity, landed writing gigs on two Comedy Central projects (Inside Amy Schumer, Comedy Central Roast of Rob Lowe), and just last week opened at Madison Square Garden for none other than Louis C.K.

This week, during his legendary parting showdown with reigning RoastMasters champion Zac Amico, Lawrence announced (or rather, Jeff Ross announced on his behalf) that he was adding another writing credit to his resume: Comedy Central’s Roast Battle, which is entering its second season. Oh, yeah: Lawrence is the current Roast Battle champion, too.

How has Lawrence managed to find all of this success in such a short period of time?

Simple: He’s fucking hilarious. Lawrence is a true comic, one who looks at his career choice as a craft, and his comedy as a product that can be honed and refined down to a razor’s edge. He takes what he does seriously, he puts in the work, and it shows.

In lieu of his move to Los Angeles to pursue the next phase of his career, Lawrence met up with the folks at Cycle to show just how he manages to whittle a joke down to its final form. Over the course of a few hours, Lawrence did sets at The Stand, The Fat Black Pussycat, and The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. During each set, there was one particular joke that he told differently than in the previous set, demonstrating how he goes about reading the audience’s reaction to a bit and then altering the joke if it doesn’t land.

Lawrence told our own Phil Provencio that he finally got the joke in the video where he wanted it by the end of the night. “I think its in a good place. I got it to where I needed it after the third time telling it,” he said confidently.
