W. Kamau Bell Album Coming in September

2016 has turned out to be quite a year for W. Kamau Bell. The critically acclaimed socio-political comedian just announced that his Showtime special Semi-Prominent Negro will be released as an album on September 30th. Filmed before a live audience in Brooklyn, Kamau gives unique, insightful and hilarious takes on everything from gentrification and marriage equality, to mixed race children and how to do Black children’s hair. The special, which aired earlier this spring on Showtime, re-affirmed Kamau’s status as one of the leading cultural critics of our time.
‘We live in critical times and comedy can help make those times a little bit easier to deal with’, Kamau said in a statement in April. ‘I hope that Semi-Prominent Negro can help people laugh and deal with these times. Also, I hope it helps me afford better health insurance. Specifically dental and vision’.
The release of this album comes on the heels of what has been a breakout year for Kamau. His CNN docu-series, United Shades Of America has just been nominated for an Emmy and his podcast Totally Re-Active (with Hari Kondabolu) and KALW show Kamau Right Now has drawn rave reviews. Kamau has also guested on a number of shows including Conan, WTF with Marc Maron, The Rachel Maddow Show, The View, Fresh Air with Terry Gross, This American Life, Tavis Smiley and more.
Semi Prominent Negro follows Kamau’s previous two stand up comedy albums: One NIGht Only and Face Full Of Flour, both of which were named one of the Top 10 Best Comedy Albums Of The Year by iTunes and Punchline Magazine.
