Here is a little bit of Luke’s story:
Many words come to mind when I think about my son Luke, a happy 8 year old and an unbelievable blessing from above. Words like love, joy, inspiration, faith, miracle, strength, warrior and most definitely HERO, comes to mind. Luke’s entire life has been a battle with daily challenges, at nine months old he suffered a brain injury during his third open heart surgery that effected his vision, speech, neurological functions and caused other health conditions, Luke now relies on a special wheelchair to support his body when sitting and to get around. Luke loves to be out and on the go and we try to make every opportunity to take him places but sometimes its difficult or we are not able to take him due to not having a vehicle that can adequately accommodate his needs. When a friend emailed me about National Mobility Awareness Month, our family was elated, wow, wouldn’t this be great for Luke and our family. I thought, what a dream come true to have the ability for Luke to sit comfortably in his chair ,be properly supported, safe and sound while driving. The ability to pull up with him to our destination and safely discharge him, no matter where we are or the weather conditions. Currently, it has been challenging to take him out of his chair and try to secure him in a car seat that he is quickly growing out of, then to lift his wheelchair in the rear of the our vehicle, not only to have to take it out and secure him properly in the chair all over again. Also, Luke is fed through a G-Tube and his feeding pump is secured to his wheelchair, being properly seated makes it possible to feed him no matter where we are. I can go on and on about how a wheelchair accessible vehicle would benefit Luke, reduce the wear and tear on his chair and save my back. When Luke is with us out as a family we have amazing time and miss him tremendously/feel guilty when he cant be with us. Providing Luke a better quality of life is my families goal. As a parent of a child with special needs, I can only say what a blessing and privilege is it to have Luke in our lives. Help us Help Luke! Luke is our Hero! Please Vote For Luke!!!
