Trevor Noah Started Stand Up Because of a Drunk Buddy

Trevor Noah, who will be taking over the Daily Show when Jon Stewart leaves next month, has officially moved to New York. His first impressions of living in the big apple are “it’s loud.”

Last night on the Tonight Show, Noah told Jimmy Fallon that he never had any aspirations to be a comedian. When he was a kid, growing up in South Africa, there was no comedy scene at all. Most of the actions surrounding being a stand up would lead to jail time– like talking about the government or even congregating with a group of other black people.

He told Fallon that one night, he was at bar where there were some guys doing comedy. His drunk friends started heckling the comics, and the comedian said if you’re so funny why don’t you come up and do this yourself. His friend said something like ‘i can’t but he can’ and pointed at Trevor. Trevor said he wasn’t drunk but didn’t want to back down from a challenge so he just went up and started talking and people laughed, and they’ve been laughing ever since.
