BAD MONKEY.  APPLE TV+:  Based on the Carl Hiassen book of the same name, Bad Monkey stars Vince Vaughn as Yancy, a suspended police detective in the Florida Keys who gets unwittingly pulled into a crazy scheme of greed and corruption, lies and deceit, and all out insanity after a tourist finds a severed arm floating in the water. Vaughn is as great as you want him to be in the series, and is perfectly cast as Yancy who just can’t leave this case alone. It’s a black comedy crime drama with plenty of comedy.

TIRES.  NETFLIX. It’s a straight up situation comedy (not not a sitcom per se) and the situation is, the team who work at a local auto repair chain, “Valley Forge Automotive Center.”  Will manages the joint and tries to keep his cousin Shane on the straight and narrow, but Shane is the kid in the back of the class who has graduated to be the kid int eh back of the local auto repair chain, and undermines his cuz at every turn. Tires was adapted from Gillis’ web series and is smart, hilarious and stars Shane Gillis. What more could you want?

PALM ROYALE. APPLE TV+.  When you bring together a murderers row of comedic talent for a tv series, a lot of times you get a shit, but with Palm Royale, you get a series that truly lives up to its talented roster. Set in 1969, Maxine Dellacorte Simmons wants more than anything to move her way into the Palm Beach high society, which requires getting some status at the Palm Royale Country Club, and a little love from local gossip rag, The Shiny Sheet. As you might expect, the lifestyles of the rich and famous also hide many secrets.  Wiig, Dern, Janney, Gerger, Bibb and Duffy are all outstanding, Bruce Dern is terrific, and if you want a true Master Class in subtle physical comedy, keep your eyes on Burnett.  Even at 91 years old, she’s still got it.

Status: Renewed for Season 2.

Cast: Bridget Everett, Jeff Hiller, Mary Catherine Garrison, Murray Hill, Tim Bagley

SOMEBODY SOMEWHERE S3, MAX.   First of all, thank you HBO Max for making this series, as it doesn’t follow the standard path. This of course, is why its so beloved, and every season of SS has made our top 10 lists.  This is sadly the third and final season, and the team behind Somebody Somewhere has delivered another winner. Bridget Everett, Murray Hill, and Jeff Hiller are not only each others chosen family, they’ve also become our extended chosen family and we are happy to have spent these years with them and the rest of the cast.  A beautiful, hilarious, run from top to bottom.

Status: Series Concluded.

ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING.  HULU.   Steve Martin, Marty Short and Selena Gomez are back and they’re looking into the murder of Sazz Pataki, played by Jane Lynch.  The suspects include several members of the crew of Only Murders in the Building: The Movie.  The cast keeps growing with more celebs than you can fit in a New York apartment, and the landscape changes as the locations expand outside of NYC to the West Coast.  This crew is always spot on, the plot lines continue to be surprising, and the laughs are always there. Pro-fesh comedy.

Status: Renewed

Cast: Richard Gadd, Jessica Gunning, Nava Mau

BABY REINDEER.  NETFLIX.  NOBODY saw this one coming.  Based on a true story, Baby Reindeer captivated America first for its bizarre plot line, and later as fans of the series started to investigate the “based on a true story” part, first figuring out who the real life Martha was, and later tracking down some of the other characters real life counterparts.  Donny Dunn- comedian and bartender- has attracted the attention of Martha. At first he’s just being nice, but soon its apparent she’s a bit stalkerish, and later a lot more becomes apparent.  Winner of six Primetime Emmy Awards and adapted from Gadd’s one man show.

KAOS, Netlfix.  The concept of this British Mythologic Dark Comedy is that three humans discover they have a connection to a prophecy and to each other while dealing with the gods of Greek and Roman Mythology. But all you really need to know is its a modern telling of ancient Gods with Jeff Goldblum as Zeus. You’re either in or you’re out and you should definitely be in.

Status: One and Done.

Cast: Brian Jordan Alvarez, Stephanie Koenig, Enrico Colantoni, Sean Patton

ENGLISH TEACHER, FX.  I know what you’re thinking. There’s a lot of school-centric television comedies out there right now.  But they’re all different.  And this one is way different. Evan Marquez is a high school english teacher in Austin Texas, and in the first episode, he deals with homophobic parents who want him fired for kissing his boyfriend, and an uproar when the schools traditional gender bending girls football game and boys cheerleading demonstration are in jeopardy.  Nervous Principal Moretti played by Enrico Colantoni seems already shellshocked trying to navigate modern school politics, and is just trying to avert catastrophe.  Bonus for having Sean Patton as Evan’s friend and colleague- the school gym teacher who may not be very progressive or saavy, but means well and can get things done in his own way.

COMPLETELY MADE UP ADVENTURES OF DICK TURPIN, APPLE TV + Fictional take on Dick Turpin, leader of the Essex gang who wants to be Englands greatest highwayman. He is pursued by Thief Taker and secretcriminal organization The Syndicate. As the title suggests, its a completely fictional story about a sincerely real historical person.  Starring Noel Fielding the series is everything you would expect from a Noel Fielding project. Absurdist is the word you’re probably looking for, or at the very least, very very silly. Definitely one of the most creative and fun rides this year.

Status: Renewed for Season 2
