Ten Best Comedy Movies of 2024!

It’s fairly obvious that the blockbuster pure comedy movie that used to dominate favorite movie lists no longer exists, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t good funny movies to watch. As the pure comedy has been in decline, the rise of comedy being blended with every other genre has been on the rise- like a cinematic Reese’s Cup. So there are still plenty of movies worth watching that deliver on the laughs this year.  And our list covers most of them- dark comedies, action comedies, comedies with romance, and even a few movies that aspire to be nothing but funny.

In 2014, Wes Anderson’s gorgeous Grand Budapest Hotel took the honors in this category. In 2015, it was Amy Schumer’s Trainwreck that got your vote. In 2016, Deadpool was your favorite movie. And in 2017 you loved Gilbert: A Gilbert Gottfried Story as much as we did. In 2018, the best comedy movie of the year came from the Coen Brothers with The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. In 2019 you picked Dolemite Is My Name as your comedy movie of the year, in 2020, the #1 comedy movie award went to Borat, in 2021, you picked Coming 2 America  as your favorite,  in 2022 Joe List’s feature film debut Fourth of July won the vote and last year you chose Tapawingo as your favorite comedy of the year.

Now it’s your turn to read the nominees for the #1 comedy movie of 2024. Scroll down to read our top 10 picks, and if and then vote! You can vote every day, we don’t care! LETS START A CULT.  If you just want to laugh, this is your movie. Its silly, bordering on dumb funny, but make no mistake, its full of laughs. The premise centers on Chip, who joined a cult after his family kept ragging on him for not working hard, and being a proper adult, only to find that he really doesn’t like following the cult rules either. When the cult members “transcend” but leave him behind, he joins up with his former leader to start a new cult and mayhem follows around every corner.  Stavros Halkias proves he’s not only a strong actor, but a very capable leading man. Rent this to see Halkias shine, and to see Daniel Simonson in his first major acting roll. Stick around for cameos by Robert Kelly and Tom Papa.

SATURDAY NIGHT.   It’s October 11, 1975 and Lorne Michaels prepares with his brand new cast for the very first episode of Saturday Night Live. The evening is chaos. Saturday Night Live is a cultural phenomenon, and a television icon, and no part of its history is more mythic than its original cast, making this a movie that everyone of a certain age will enjoy. The cast takes on a nearly impossible task- of emulating icons- and attempting to show their brilliance, their comedic chops, and their humanity.

BEETLEJUICE, BEETLEJUICE.  Did we need a sequel to Beetlejuice? Not really. But we’ve got it and its not going into any hall of fame but if you have HBO Max, its a good comfort watch. Its set 30 years after the original film, centering on Lydia, a paranormal tv host, and her daughter who doesn’t believe in ghosts. The film is set in motion when Lydia Deetz’s father dies and the fam gathers at the Connecticut haunted house for the funeral. Silly, nostalgic, with enough laughs to merit a watch, especially since you don’t have to pay for it.

Ricky Stanicky

Written By: Peter Farrelly, Jeff Bushell & Others
Cast: Zac Efron, Jermaine Fowler, Andrew Santino, John Cena
GENRE: Boys Will Be Boys

RICKY STANICKY.   Three adult married men have been friends since boyhood, and are still blaming everything in their lives on a fake friend named Ricky Stanicky.  When shit starts to go wrong in their story, they have no choice but to hire an actor to portray their legendary friend. It’s hijinks, it’s silly, somewhat in the vein of The Hangover series, and has plenty of laughs. Andrew Santino and Jermaine Fowler are great in their roles, and Jeff Ross has a fun cameo.

Watch on Prime.

Director: Sean Baker
Written by: Sean Baker
Cast: Mikey Madison, Vanya Zakharov
GENRE: Drama, Comedy, Romance

ANORA.  This years critics choice is Anora- beloved by film reviewers, hailed by hailers, and getting nominated all over the place. If that doesn’t sound like a comedy, you’re right. This genre blending flick is definitely comedy with a lower case c.  But there is enough comedy to squeak it into our list. Mikey Madison gives a great performance, and Sean Baker has now gone from indie darling to established director. Anora won the Palm D’Or, has 5 Golden Globe Nominations and is in AFI’s Top 10 Films of the year and you’ve probably heard enough about it that we don’t need to write much more. A young sex worker meets and marries the son of an Oligarch. If this is your type of film, its already on your list. And if its not, you can probably sit this one out.

Director: David Gordon Green
Written By: Leland Douglas
Cast: Ben Stiller, Linda Cardellini, Edi Patterson, Tim Heidecker, Toby Huss, Arlo Jason
GENRE: Drama-Com, Comama
Release: Hulu

NUTCRACKERS. Most likely this is the first time you’re hearing about this movie.  It’s not really breaking any new ground, but its a really sweet funny Christmastime movie and if you’re already paying for Hulu, you’ll get your moneys worth. Ben Stiller is a single loner career minded dude, who has to go make arrangements for his sisters 4 wild and weird kids after she and her husband are killed in a car accident. The kids are the super stars here and if you love film and tv about weird kids, you’re going to dig this. It’s like Overboard, without the amnesia, with a touch of Baby Business, and Shameless mixed in.

WICKED  If you haven’t already made up your mind about whether you want to see Wicked, nothing here is going to to sway you either way. It’s the prequel story of Elphaba who you know as the Wicked Witch of the West, and her friendship with Galina, you know, Glinda the good.  Ariana Grande has comedy chops. For real. But if you’re not into musicals, you can sit this one out. If you are into them- this has probably got your vote.

THE FALL GUY.   Hollywood stunt performer Colt Seavers breaks his back during a stunt, and abandons his career and girlfriend. 18 months later, he becomes involved in a conspiracy surrounding her directorial debut action film.y and often obnoxious. It’s your classic action comedy- a popcorn flick- your whole family can watch it together. No, its not going to be something you’re talking about for years to come, but hey, its 2024.  They don’t make em like that anymore.

DEADPOOL AND WOLVERINE.  Yeah you know what this is. It’s Deadpool only they’ve added Wolverine. But much like Deadpool its genuinely funny and charming. Deadpool learns that the Time Variance Authority plans to destroy his universe so he works with Wolverine from another universe to stop them. It’s a mainstream legit comedy that throws in multiverse and all the sarcasm you can stand.

Director: Pamela Adlon
Written By: Ilana Glazer & Josh Rabinowitz

Cast: Ilana Glazer, Michelle Buteau, Hasan Minhaj, Sandra Bernhard, Oliver Platt
GENRE: Comedy
Release: Hulu

BABES.  Pamela Adlon’s feature film directorial debut is a sleeper and I don’t mean that its boring. This lesser known gem is one of the funniest movies this year. It may not appeal to bros and dude bros but women- and those who don’t run around screaming women aren’t funny, will love it. Michelle Buteau is outstanding and criminally underrated. Ilana Glazer is as funny as ever in this highly physical comedy that is often about pregnancy, but also about what happens to friendships as we age, starting families and hitting different phases of our lives. Def recommend.
