The Just for Laughs Award Show was absolutely incredible this year. Tiffany Haddish received the comedy person of the year award and her award was being presented by Kevin Hart who was slightly delayed in getting in. She actually joked from the audience later on that he was on his private plane, and he was kind of embarrassed and said, that’s nobody’s business how I got here.
During the award show everybody gave very touching speeches, especially Tiffany who appeared to shed tears a couple of times when she talked about her past growing up in a foster home and how she overcame all of that to reach the level that she’s at today and how grateful she was to all of the people that helped her.
When Kevin finally came out- his plane had just landed and he came out in a tshirt and jeans and spoke beautifully about their friendship and how long they knew each other and how proud he was of her to come up from where she came from. And she gave him a present while he was on stage of a tiny pair of sneakers, like that you’d give to a little child and inside of it was the $300 that he leant her years ago and she’s been trying to pay him back and he will never accept it. And so she said I’m giving it to you in front of all these white people because you can’t reject it in front of all these white people and he laughingly took it and said, that’s not fair and he probably was going to give it back later.
I had seen Tiffany earlier as she came down the red carpet she wearing this beautiful red sequinned dress that she wore for a lot of the day. She said she couldn’t wait to change into it, and she was wearing it later on in the hotel lobby.
There were other great moments during the show and on the red carpet which will all be in my column on Monday morning. But here’s a quick overview. Lil Rel got the breakout comedy star of the year award. His award was presented by Deon Cole who recently killed at Gotham Comedy Club- I was there for that. He was thrilled.
I got interviews with Everybody. Jo Koy got stand up comedian of the year, presented by Howie Mandel who is now one of the owners. The only one who didn’t do the carpet was Maria Bamford who presented the award for Comedy Special of the Year to Hannah Gadsby. Hannah came by and chatted about Nanette and why self deprecating humor is over and why she’s tired of making fun of herself to make people laugh. She’s all about empowerment now.
Mark Maron did the red carpet, and presented the award to Liz ? and Carly Mensch for their Netflix comed GLOW.
Both Lil Rel and Jo Koy were so thrilled to get their awards. They were very humble, very greateful.
The big surprise was Dave Chappelle did the red carpet with John Mayer and he stopped off to chat cause we’re old friends, as did John Mayer, which was really cool, very special. Dave said that he never does red carpets but he talked a lot about doing a show together with John Mayer, saying that John has a great sense of humor and that he used to do stand up. John and I talked about how comedy and music are very similar- that there’s a rhythm to comedy, and even just one word will change the impact of a joke.
Everybody gave a speech that was not only funny but very heartfelt. At the end they stood on the stage and took pictures with people, selfies, they were all very grateful. More to come!
