There’s A Movement To Rename Yawkey Way Because Of Racism

yawkeyA stretch of Jersey Street in front of Fenway Park was renamed after longtime Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey in 1976. Now there’s a movement to rename the street as some feel it’s racist. Yawkey’s Red Sox were the last MLB team to integrate in 1959, had management turn down Willie Mays years earlier, and in ’45 passed on Jackie Robinson and Sam Jethroe (who later integrated the Braves in 1950). These reasons are why Yawkey has been branded a racist – well, that, and the story that during Robinson and Jethroe’s tryout he yelled “Get those n—-rs off the field!”

This is SO going to go over well in Beantown.
