The Temple Horses Pick The 6 Comic Book Movies They’d Like to See Made

Nick and ryan

Temple Horses is the duo of Nick Ruggia and Ryan Hoffman, who have written and produced online sketches starring Mike Canon, Greer Barnes, Jaqi Furback, Corinne Fisher and loads of other hilarious NYC comedians. And like any couple in a good romantic comedy, they hated each other when they first met doing open mics around New York.  Amy Hawthorne sat down with  Nick and Ryan and asked them to pick the 6 comic book movies they’d like to see made.

“It was just political bullshit.” Ryan claims, but Nick quickly corrects him, “No, it was about you being a fucking maniac. I’d never met him before and I was sitting and talking with a friend about Obama and, without even knowing my name, he decides to just butt in and shut down the conversation for fifteen minutes. And then he just leaves!”

Ryan admits, “I went in very hard. It was a valid assumption that I was an asshole.”

“But if he’s your asshole in your group of friends,” Ryan explains, “He’s great.”

The pair finally buried the hatchet and teamed up when “we realized that we both wrote and so we sat down and talked about our ideas together and instead of defending our ideas to each other, we found we were jamming on each others’ ideas and trying to make them better.”

The two still perform stand-up, as well as produce Temple Horses sketches and other writing projects and they don’t expect to “pick a side” any time soon. As Ryan puts it, “Back in the day, there was one thing, it was radio. And then there was TV. And now there’s TV, the internet, instagram, Vine, you just have so many platforms you have to exist on. You can’t just pick one. And online video is a great medium for people to see you and see that you’re funny, but not give away what they come pay a cover and two drink minimum to see, which is stand-up.”

Besides comedy, the two love comic books and, as writers and producers, has some serious thoughts on comic books that should jump on the current boom and get themselves made into movies.

#1 Civil War

CIVWAR_CVRS.indd

Civil War was a genius comic event that addressed the main issue of our time: how much control should the government have? After a C-list superhero team accidentally destroys a city, the government demands that all heroes be registered, government employees. Captain America refuses. Iron Man jumps on board. The world’s heroes split down the middle and an epic war of good versus good ensues. Spider-Man’s arc (unmasking himself before changing his mind and joining Cap) is integral to this story, which makes me nervous about the rumors that Captain America 3 might be this story. It can be done without Spider-Man, but not as well.

#2 Red Son

For me, this storyline is the only Superman movie I desperately want to see made in my lifetime (and it never will be). This Mark Millar alternate history posits the question of “What Would Happen if Superman was raised in the Soviet Union instead of the U.S.A.?” Lex Luthor is a brilliant antihero, plotting moves against the Man of Steel’s totalitarian expansion of the Iron Curtain. The game of chess between the two of them is fascinating, and I like chess… kinda obsessed with it actually.

#3 Death of Captain America

This is probably the best dark mystery in recent Marvel books. So why mix it in with Civil War? It followed it immediately in the comics. Let them breathe separately. Watching Iron Man, the Winter Soldier, Falcon, Black Widow and Agent 13 uncover the Red Skull’s plot can carry a movie by itself.

#4 “A Death in the Family”

death in the family

This is one time that Batman truly loses. In an attempt to rehabilitate a young street punk named Jason Todd and turn him into another crime fighting sidekick wearing the Robin mantle, Bruce Wayne unwittingly sends him to a vicious death at the hands of the Joker and a crowbar. It was a fate chosen by the readers of DC themselves as they called in to vote whether or not Jason would make it, and the guilt of Robin’s death tortures Batman for years. It also brings him closer than he’s ever been to breaking his one rule.

#5 Iron Man 4: The Mandarin

iron man

We all know about Downey’s contract dispute. We all know this might never happen. But they left the door open for a real Mandarin in the “All Hail The King” one-shot. And he is Iron Man’s archenemy. They could do the really cool Mandarin-takes-over-the-world-and-makes-it-a-nightmare story from Iron Man 500 and 521-526 or they could go with the accumulating the ten rings story from the recent French cartoon series. Either way, I’d be thrilled.

#6 Identity Crisis

identity crisis

Someone is going around killing family members of Superheroes. A great mystery that really challenges what it means to be a hero, and at what cost do secret identities stay maintained? Can you afford to be idealistic in a time when those you love are being gunned down around you? Identity Crisis is a fantastic standalone storyline that follows less popular members of the Justice League, and features an epic ass kicking by Slade Wilson.
