Sully Sullenberger Stars as Tom Hanks on Jimmy Kimmel Live

It looks like another big weekend for Tom Hanks’ movie career. His newest film, “Sully” opens nationwide today. It’s directed by Clint Eastwood and stars Tom Hanks as Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, the hero behind the Miracle on the Hudson. Tom Hanks visited Jimmy Kimmel Live to talk about his new movie.
For anyone who may have somehow forgotten seeing images of a giant commercial airliner coming in for a landing on the Hudson River along side the Manhattan skyline, here’s a quick refresher. In 2009, Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger took off from NYC’s LaGuardia Airport on US Airways Flight 1549 and minutes later, the airbus lost both engines and Sully was forced to land in the river saving all 155 people on board.
Tom Hanks has played plenty of real life people including another captain, Richard Phillips, plus there’s astronaut Jim Lovell, Congressman Charlie Wilson, icon Walt Disney, and Sheriff Woody. Okay, that last one isn’t a real person…we just wish he was. But so far in his life, no one has played Tom Hanks on the big screen. Jimmy Kimmel wanted to fix that with a surprise for his guest.
Kimmel first surprised Tom Hanks by bringing out the real life Captain Sully. Hanks was thrilled to see the inspiration for his new movie, even if that meant moving down the couch and being demoted to “first officer” during his own Kimmel interview. The surprises didn’t end there. Jimmy Kimmel debuted the new trailer for “Hanks”. It stars Sully Sullenberger as the title character, movie star Tom Hanks. Because after all, fair’s fair. “Hanks” is the biopic which stars an airline pilot playing a two time Academy Award winner.
Watch Jimmy Kimmel present the trailer for “Hanks” below. It’s a roller coaster ride piloted by Sully himself through the career of Tom Hanks from his early days in Hollywood to his Oscar winning night. It even includes one of Tom Hanks’ favorite co-stars.
According to Jimmy Kimmel, “Hanks” premieres this “Hanks-giving” while “Sully” starring Tom Hanks, Aaron Eckhart, Laura Linney and Katie Couric as herself (wow, how’d they get her!?) opens in theaters nationwide starting today.
