Steve Rannazzisi’s 5 Worst Places to Get Stoned
Steve Rannazzisi is a New York boy whose near miss on September 11, 2001 inspired him to quit his corporate job and head to Los Angeles to pursue a career in comedy. He quickly began performing and working at The Comedy Store, where he was discovered by the producers of Punk’d and has been working steadily ever since.
He’s now well known as Kevin, The League’s spin on the bumbling husband with a hot wife and a couple of kids. That’s not too far off from his real life, he’s back on the East Coast with his wife & kids now (when he’s not busy filming or touring the country in support of his Comedy Central special Manchild). He’ll be recording his next special at The Wilbur Theater in Boston on Sunday June 21 (bring your dad!) One of my favorite Rannazzisi bits is “Stoned at the airport” so I caught up with Steve to ask about the other worst times & places to get stoned.
1. The Airplane. Well, obviously, the airplane. Any confined space really.
2. Before a Show. The first time I ever got stoned before I went onstage, I had smoked with Freddy Lockhart. He was not yet a proficient comedian while he was stoned, but waaay better than I was, and he said he was going to sit in the back. I remember going up onstage and just, I was bombing real, real bad. I was trying to do crowdwork and during one of the dead silent moments, he just yelled out from the back “Boo, nigga!” It was hilarious, but it was horrible.
3. Around Scary Stuff. I got a little too stoned an Universal Horror Nights, you know, the Halloween thing. I had to take a few moments to myself.
4. Before School. A buddy of mine went camping and they all had this big dinner the last night and then ate a pot brownie. He went to bed like “I don’t feel anything” and woke up at 5 in the morning and had to go to work and it was like he had been digesting his food and then the pot brownie kicked in. And he had to go to work and teach! And this is a guy who probably does pot three times a year.
5. The Main Room Green Room at The Comedy Store. It’s one of the best/worst places because you can get caught back there for hours, having great conversation and just getting more and more stoned and then you walk out of there reeetarded. Like there’s no coming back. It’s a dangerous place to get stoned.
