Even as the 25th anniversary for Do The Right Thing approaches, Spike Lee is still out for blood.
The acclaimed writer and director closed out the American Black Film Festival on Sunday with at a special screening for cast and crew of his latest film, Da Sweet Blood Of Jesus at the DGA Theater in midtown Manhattan on Monday.
Decked out in Knicks orange and white, Lee thanked Kickstarter, which he used to fund the film, everyone who contributed to the campaign and his NYU Film students, who pushed him to go the crowd-funding route. Attendees of note included Wesley Snipes, musician/songwriter Valerie Simpson (who appears in a rousing scene in a Brooklyn church), Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid – who plays on the film’s score) and cast members Steven Tyrone Williams and Zaraah Abrahams who play the romantic leads Hess and Ganja.
After the screening, the cast and crew headed up to The Hudson Hotel for a kick ass after party which was co-sponsored by Grey Goose.
No word yet on a theatrical release. Lee did announce that the soundtrack for the film’s soundtrack featuring a score by Bruce Hornsby and several independent artists, will be released on Epic Records.
